Hi folks, greetings from a new owner in Northern Ireland. I have a CBF 1000 ABS which is a brilliant bike , went from home to south spain on it last year, but its getting heavier as I get older so I started to think about a lighter bike. Went to get a test ride on a F650 Gs, (short legs so the F800 is out of the question,) and came home disappointed as my local dealer did not have a demo!. Thought I would go to Jefferies in Leeds and was telling a mate who spread the word and I ended up being offered an 2008 model in red with 1400 miles by another biking friend whose wife had it. I bought it and went to see about getting it serviced at the BMW dealer who were helpful and advised that it was due a new fuel sender and chain and sprocket set under recall and that they would do this when I left it in for service. A few weeks later all was done. Now I had been using it to commute and found it easier in the traffic compared to the Honda and I was getting 67 mpg without trying and that is a lot better than the Honda, happy days, BUT there was a hell of a rattle , slap , chatter whatever from the drive chain despite adjusting it to the tighter limit. I put it down to the dodgy chain and hoped it would disappear when the chain was replaced. Well new chain fitted and still a bit of slap but not so bad, however the chain adjustment as left by the dealer is tending to the max and i will need to tighten it in a few miles. From the forum it would appear that this is a problem and it really irritates me. I notice a plastic guide or rubbing strip along the top of the swinging arm , would that be the problem and has anyone removed them to see if that sorts things by providing a clearance? Have not sold Honda yet! . Otherwise the bike is great, I have fitted Givi pannier frames still to get the panniers and reckon it will be OK for touring albiet at a slower pace than I might do on the Honda! Brian

Welcome to the site, a font of all things GS. Got a GSA 1200 just a few months ago, and absolutely love it. Founds the various sections on the site to be very useful & helpful, especially as I'm not too technically gifted (yet).

You'll no doubt find some like minded folk in the region section, so there'll be no shortage of rideouts, trips etc.

Enjoy :D

I think I'll move your post over to the Technical Section of the forum brianya where you'll get the right response to your queries.

Congratulations on the new bike and welcome, enjoy your stay with us ..... hope you get sorted soon :)

Welcome and good luck with your chain slap. One or two others, Tim Cullis in particular have reported similar problems and I'm not sure if they came up with a solution. I replaced my chain at about 22K miles with a heavier duty DID one. I have to say I never had a problem with the original or the new one so I can't offer any advice I'm afraid. Hope you get it sorted and enjoy the bike.

Welcome! Hope you get your 650 sorted out! Afraid my bike been fine to! Just done 11k and the chain is fine, with plenty of life in it still!

Is a great bike thought, touring wise its fantastic. I average 70mpg 2 up with everything including the kitche n sink!:)

Cheers:beerjug:

You are not alone.

My machine (09 650) suffers with the same problem. The chocolate chain snapped and was replaced with a quality item which has, to date, covered approximately 6K miles. I was surprised when the dreadful knocking began, about 1,000 miles ago to be informed, over the 'phone by the dealer, that is was probably the chain, the noise being amplified by the hollow alloy swing arm. I checked and adjusted it to the correct tolerances but the noise persists.

The dealer is to have a look at it when it goes in for service in four weeks time.
