K & N air filter

Hello wise fellow Gsers.
I'm thinking of popping one of those lovely k and n air filters in my 2004 1150 GSA. I have the standard bmw can with a Y piece fitted.
What advantage will I get and will I have to adjust anything or will the fuel injection and Lambchop sensor do it all for me. (dont want it running too lean)
Still get a tiny bit of surging, most noticible if I hold it on a steady throttle in lower gears. Not a big deal as I can live with it but wondered if a k and n would help. Also, do they affect fuel consumption.

A K & N will make a weak engine run even weaker. If you do (and I did!), then do the 'Steptoe link' to effect a cheap cure. Search is your friend if you don't know what I'm talking about!

Air filter

I've installed a UNIFILTER (oiled foam) made here in Oz. Apparently much betterer than the K&N filter and last forever as well with proper maintenance (re oiling occasionally) .....and the kit comes with 2 'socks' which slip inside the intake tube for relly dusty conditions.
But as always DYOR!!

I run a K&N with "Y" piece and std can.Apart from some popping/farting on the overrun have had no problems.Also did the Steptoe CCP mod but apart from that,no other mods needed as the sensors should sort it all out automatically.Saying that though,i dont think i would bother with a K&N again.
You would be better off correctly adjusting the TPS (throttle position sensor),setting the valve clearances/rocker end float and balancing the Throttle Bodies accurately to cure the surging.
Fitting a "Y" piece made the biggest improvement to fuel consumption.

Nope. They only control the tickover for emission purposes. Everything else is done by a series of fixed fuel maps in the ECU. By using different Cat Code Plugs (or the Steptoe link) you get the ECU to run different fuel maps.

Pipercross air filter: works a treat - easy to clean but no noticable advantages power wise.

yours is a twin spark? set it up properly and surging will disapear, k and n? only plus is you can wash it, use a chip or ign box , to stop weakness, but the performance increase is only from a y piece

many thanks guys. You have been most helpfull. Will probably just stick bwith std filter as I have the y piece to give me the extra oomph.
