The air cleaner for my VFR was $128- last time I asked, $68- more expensive than the K & N and they flung in a jet and needle kit to go with it for the $60.The filter was pre oiled, and there was a bottle of oil in the box too. I've cleaned it once in 75000 km, or probably around 1000 hrs of engine time. Air box was as clean as a whistle, engine uses virtually no oil and valve clearances unchanged in 120,000 km.
Bike went better after the K&N and carb kit was fitted, but how much was due to the jet kit who knows.
Most tests I have read dont go on for long, two or three hrs is more typical
Real world for a filter is rain, hail ,snow and sleet, fine bull dust from a bone dry desert track, clouds of billowing top soil in a drout, and the fine black detritus of civilisation at all times. The K&N copes with this well.
None of this seems to get into the so called tests - they dont usually tell you how they oiled the filter, or how long the test lasts for, etc, etc. they simply are not a credible test.
I am a fan of Dave Visard too. He has done some good work on small block Chevs too, and the 350 I had in my old Holden ute was fettled using his How to build Horsepower books, and everything turned out just the way he said it would. I cant believe that just about the only thing that he ever got wrong was recommending K& N filters.
