Ok, what are peoples thoughts on using a K & N filter for an otherwise stock 2009 R1200GS?

:blagblah

Are there any negative points??

Less money in your wallet
Zero improvements
You'll have to clean and oil it more often
The original paper filters do actually filter more -> less crap going through

[full disclosure: I have K&N on some of the bikes]

Lovely induction sound. Makes it all worth while.

Sent using a Jedi mind trick!

Wouldnt bother. I have one, put it in and noticed no difference. Used it for a bit then put stock back in and again noticed no difference.

It's sitting in its box in my garage, just not got round to selling it yet. Use a K&N in my transit and individual filters on my GSXR1100. Main reason on Transit is its fit n forget on a not to particularly advanced engine and the GSXR for tuning.

Did once find a filtration comparison between a group of filters and the K&N's didn't come out to well. If I can find it again I'll post the link.

And it's very easy to over oil it, then it will flow a lot less air than a standard filter.

Only reason you might want to swap to one would be if you knew you were going to a lot of water crossings.

The standard paper one might not last too long when soaked in water.

I asked the mechanic who services my GS and he advised against it too but gave water crossing as a reason for doing it if you really had to.

No other benefits to be gained from giving K&N your money.

For water crossing a paper element filter will not let as much water through as a K&N so will hopefully clog up and starve the engine of air.
A K&N stands more chance of allowing enough water through to hydraulic the engine.
K&N do not filter nearly as well as a stock paper filter. Have a look in an airbox that has had one fitted !!.

David Vizard did some testing on K&N filters way back. He found they filtered extremely and flowed a lot better than paper elements.

However if dyno testing shows the GS K&N is no better over paper there really is no point. If you need better air flow chop the intake pipe and flat the end. It's got a smaller intake area than either throttle body so has to be a large restriction.

Post the results in the "my bike is too loud" section.
