Can anyone help? If I fit a K&N filter to a R1150GS fitted with a Remus Y piece and road legal back box do I need to fit a TFI unit as well or will the B.M.W. fuel management system moify itself and adapt for the increased air flow?

From what I have gathered from lots of forum reading, it seems to vary from bike to bike. Some bikes are OK, some bikes are running borderline weak from new.

I deduced mine was running on the weak side from new. Signs from mine were vibration at high rpm, no matter how many times the throttle bodies were balanced. Pipes going bluer than usuall, like almost round the bend and onto the straight bit. Zero deposits on the plugs, but that is sometimes OK from what I now gather. When pulling hard in 5th or 6th at high rpm with the throttle back against the stop, as you close the throttle gradually the bike picks up a bit.

I ran the bike for lots of miles with Y piece K&N etc, maybe 10k and it seems to have had no ill effect. However, I fitted a R259 Techlusion widget and the bike runs like a bird. No vibration, better throttle response, pulls better in the higher gears, but...mpg has gone down from 190ish on a tank to 170ish. There is a reduction in mpg but exactly what I cant say.

Choice is yours. It should be OK, but is a good chance it will run better with a Techlusion fitted.

Thanks panzer patrol. Anyone else had any experience that they can pass on?

Much the same as panzer, But for the one off cost of the K&N filter they have a 100k mile warranty you cant go wrong.
I feel that fitting parts like you have is a gradual development of the GS which is in a very low stat of tune in standard form.
I have recently fitted the Techlusion TFI to my GS & I can honestly say the difference is stunning totally gone is the surgeing which I have had since day one ,slow speed traffic work has been transformed, pulling away used to induce a rattle if I didn't give a good handfull of revs this has also gone, smoother & cleaner all the way through the rev range, All this on standard base settings.
I have not had a chance to set it up yet so I'm hopefull for even more !!

hi medic
just a thought for you if the oxygen sensor is working ok the system should adjust itself automaticly
i think the clue is in the name oxy sensor(or lambda sensor)
it constantly sniffs the gasses from the exhaust and adjusts the injectors to keep optimum balance and mixture ,
now then if you have had the sensor disconnected then you will always have a problem as the system cannot adjust itself as it was designed to...

hope this info helps...

(big apologys if i just taught me grandma to suck eggs)

Slimbo. just read your reply. Haven't fitted the parts yet but was intending on re-fitting the lambda sensor. Thanks for your input though.
