K & N or OEM air filter

Way back in August last year there was a poll about choosing between fitting a K&N or OEM air filter. The overwhelming response from 20 or so bods was that K&N is the way forward.

Presumably this is still the view?

If I fit a K&N I must re-balance the FI, or rather, adjust the air bypass screws to compensate for the greater airflow through the K&N. Is that correct?

TIA Richard

BTW It's an 1150GS with CAT (at the moment) and standard silencer.

The K & N filter is really a road racing filter that will keep out big particles and at the same time let more air get through. The idea is to get a better breathing situation for performance.

If you wish to traverse dirt and eat dust, I would be hesitant about a K & N filter from what I have personally seen.

I have been using Uni Filters since 1976 in all my bikes except my 80 G/S.

Currently my 1100GS runs a two stage Uni Filter and the crap it collects is quite incredible. The fact that I can clean it on the side of the road is a bonus for me, but may not be important to you.

Check out their site:

All of the BMW works cars in the Paris Dakar run Uni Filters as do about half of the vehicles in the event.

Hi Mick,

Yes I saw your comments in earlier threads about the Uni filters. However, all my riding will be in what passes for the 'clean' air of UK, i.e. on road all the time, so I suspect that the less than total filtration offered by the K&N will be adequate. I must say that many years ago when I fitted a K&N to my Africa Twin no one made any mention about the trade off between airflow and particle size entrapment when I was looking at K&Ns

Cheers

Richard
