Hi

I have an 1150 GSA and am going to change my air filter. I have read lots of positive reviews on the K+N but was wondering if anyone has a uni-filter fitted? Any advice would be appreciated re the filters as to which one is better and any discount sites to purchase from? Thanks

Baz

Hi there Baz,

I dont fit K&Ns any more as i find they dont protect from dust and tiny particles as well as a foam filter does. Im sure ill get abuse for slagging them but this is from fitting them to several bikes. My colleague has a similar problem on his gsxr too. We just found that tiny fine particles could get through and the inside of the airbox (post filter side) was plastered in the stuff after a while. Fine particles wreck engines! I would go with a pleated foam air filter and i will be doing that with my gs in the next few days or so.

Hope you find this useful

Paul

Hi Paul

Thanks for the reply. I take it the pleated foam filter will need oiling and cleaning every so often? What make will you use?

Cheers

Baz

Yeah, its best to keep them clean mate. I have used the same K&N "service" kit to do foam filters and it works a treat. Im not sure which i will use yet. Im not sure who make them for the gs, but ill look into it. Im sure the other guys on here will be able to tell us though :)

I have used pipercross and dna in the past... i found them to be of excellent quality.

Thanks for the replies so far. I am planning to do a long trip next year to Mongolia and back all being well so was thinking of changing to a self service air filter along with a y-piece to take off the cat for poor grade fuel. Will the standard filter cope with dusty conditions? :nenau

Heh im doing something similar with the mrs. Im not worried about the standard filter. Hell itll probably cope with dust better as its not an "oiled" type which will stick to it and clog it up like that. If your worried stick to standard, being fair its probably got the best filtration at the expense of a teeny tiny bit of air flow. But bmw dont pay thousands in design revenue for some bloke to just bung any old thing on.

Im only putting on a racier one for a bit of induction noise really.

No one thing one should not do with the Mrs is increase induction noise. I am a firm believer in standard filters on the Mrs and motorbikes. Mind you a well oiled Mrs can be a fine thing under the right circumstances.:D

I've been through VeRY dusty conditions (dalton highway in Alska) and it was coverd with thick coat of dust as was the whole bike. Knocked it out on the
from and all the dust fell off and the filter looked like new again so sitck to the standard no point in spending money to be "dfferent" , takle the advice of Mr S. he's done it all before,
Dave (I hate christmas! ) GS.

Well thanks again for the replies. Out of interest my local BMW dealer in the parts dept recommended a K+N. Cheers

I run Uni-filters and I think they are better over K&N, but I have never run K&N. My thinking is that K&N say there is more airflow - but to acheive that the foam has to be more open, therefore letting more fine particles through.

the Uni-filter are foam and do require cleaning and oiling but if you have two or three then the job is not so bad, wait till they all need doing and youare set up to do them all at the same time.

Also, I got the snorkle pre-filter that I beleive is a good thing too (so much so I am thinking of contacting them for a pre-filter for my LR Discovery)

with the foam filters you can have them all clean and pre-oiled and then put them in a bag and then half way to Mongolia change it, change it in Mongolia and change it half way back, they pack up smaller than a original equipment paper filter, are quite cheap in the grand scheme of things and as they are all new and pre-oiled you dont have to take any cleaning solvents or stuff with you.

Unifitler recomend the use of Bel-ray filter oil

you will need to take disposalbe rubber gloves with you though, the oil on them is sticky as and a PITA to clean off youhands - especially if you are in teh bush!

avoid anything that says you can clean the filter oil with water, get water in your airbox, it cleans your filter and then you have no filter!

My 1100GS had a K&N fitted when i brought it and i was a little concerned with how dirty the post filter airbox was. I'll be replacing it with a BMW jobbie before summer.
The downside to Hay Ewe's idea is putting something else in already over full panniers ( space is sure to be in short supply on a run like Mongolia). How ever effective it is, I'd be shying away from some thing that required me to carry spares when an alternative is available that didn't.

There's the issue.....

A standard filter will get blocked up and you'll need to replace it (or give it a god bang out to keep it going)...but if the other doesn't get blocked up, it's not doing the job is it!! :blast

The increased air flow comes because it's letting more past!

For dusty conditions, stick with standard- as above, the foam ones don't hack it :nono

More profit on a K&N than a standard filter, plus the extras like K&N filter oil and cleaner -

Folks

Many thanks for the advice! Standard seems to be tipping the balance at the moment on here. Safe travels.
