Newbie K1100LT owner with Electrical Problems

I have a 03 1150gsa and have always fancied a k11 so i just got myself a 93 k1100lt But when i turned up to collect it the chap told me the battery was flat and it woulds not start we gave it half an hour on his charger but it would only click when you pressed the start button, The bike had been MOTed last month and only done 5 miles since so i took a chance as he seemed like a good chap but i think i have made a mistake

I have had the battery on charge for about 24 hours but still i only get the starter relay clicking, i tried another battery and tried jumping it of my car but no change. I have pulled the relay and had a look and it looks OK inside but when i looked inside the box of relays the temperature control relay is missing ?

Also on the list of things that don't seem to be working are the lights, Horn, screen and the radio, The hazard lights work but the indicators all flash when you press the left, right or cancel button and is the fan supposed to come on when you press the top second from left switch on the fairing ?

Please help

Possibly worn out/ stickky brushes in the starter. Common problem apparently. Motorworks do a little kit to replace them. Do a search in this section an there are a couple of posts that mention it.

Spot on bumpmuncher :thumb Smacked it with a big hammer and it fired up first time :D

One of the best forums for K11 stuff: k11og.org, but also a new one motobrick.com. Loads of info etc. I have a '94 K1100RS in the fast colours.

K bikes seem to have complex electrics but the fix is often very simple. The starter brush/comm contact and the starter relay can cause a few probs but are easily fixable. The starters are easy to clean and get parts for and if you are canny you can open the relay and sort that a bit too:)

As I recall, the power shedding relay for the ancillaries is earthed via the starter motor brushes, first sign that all is not well is usually dodgy happenings with the lights etc.

Great bikes, had one myself for about 10 years, lovely torquey motor.

Some folk have problems with the starter 'sprag clutch'. Seemingly its a gearbox/bell housing off job.
Hopefully its not that.
Check on the' k11 owners' group forum. Lots of info.

K1100's

Brilliant machines but petrol tank a bit small for a touring bike, I had tow latest being a 1996 special edition immaculate went like a bomb so flexible 10 to flat out in top gear. But, got an 1150 GS and never seemed to ride it! so let it go,
silly thing to do.

manual fan

Manual fan switch is so you can turn it on early to stop them getting so hot. As when they get hot the fan comes on and cooks your legs. A Good mod.

Common problem if the oil isn't changed regularly.

If the sprag clutch problem does appear you'll find adding a couple of litres of ATF and running the bike for 15 minutes will cure it ;).
Obviously change the oil afterwards .

Saves a lot of work
