Its new tyre time for me ... have been faithful to TKC's for the last 10 yrs+
I'm contemplating a change but not sure what to go for! Confused after reading all the various threads... so recent users honest feedback would be appreciated!

The K60 Scouts get good reviews - but not sure what they are like in the wet? I do mainly tarmac - but often bad potholed roads and when out in the villages here can be on gravel and hard pack clay/gravel mixs. Off road can be up over flower rich grassy pastures and odd rocky tracks.
Always been happy with the TKCs - but they don't last long really.

So advice and feedback will be appreciated - especially as choice is limited here and prices higher than UK!!

If you do much off road and any of it is muddy TKC's, although I've no direct experience of them everybody says the same.

I've done a lot of miles on original Tourance's and K60's, almost 100,000 miles between the two types. Both will cover similar mileages. All on road the Tourance will feel better but off road they are very limited. On road the K60 can be ridden to the sidewall on a good dry road, in the wet a bit of respect for the block pattern is recommended. Also, on road, the K60 allows the bike to move around quite a lot which requires a confident rider. Off metalled roads on gravel and dirt the K60 is way better than a Tourance.

Road = Tourance with up to 10,000 miles per set depending how smoothly you accelerate and brake.
Off road = TKC
Split = K60 mileage ditto Tourance. They are noisier than the Tourance as well.

K60 Scout is a good call then for your needs. I have the same feeling on TKC80s - an excellent offroad tyre with some decent road capability, but doesn't last well. Tourance (the original, not the EXP or the newest version) is the longest lasting tyre I know for GS, but I've almost killed myself on more muddy offroad with those. Near zero grip on a very soft stuff.

The new K60 "Scout" versions aren't as noisy as the original K60 (non-Scout) were but also less offroad-oriented. It's a good 50/50 compromise tyre for East-European dash on potholed tar and gravel, lasts very decently as well, much longer than TKC80s.

FYI - there's a new copycat TKC80 tyre on the market as well with a little twist - Sava MC60. Apparently made in Slovenia and surprisingly good quality. Not much more info so far on longetivity, onroad/offroad etc. Maybe worth testing out?

Have you tried the Golden Tyre brand, I have just fitted a GT200, slightly more agressive than a TKC 80, not tried it in anger yet, maybe this weekend.... maybe not for the icy greasy stuff!!!

First time see those, GT200 looks like an attractive rubber indeed, I see they come in tubless versions as well. Keep us updated how they are! :beerjug:
 
Will do, the pig should be out again at the weekend and the rain has stopped, it should be interesting, its got a nice shape on the rim round not "squared".
 
I quite fancy trying the sava tyres next for my off road wheels.
 
All road I'd go Conti Trail Attack.
Off road TKC
Mixture K60.

I never had the K60 sliding in the wet, but then I backed off a respectful amount. The Conti will let you scrape the pegs in the dry and isn't so far off in the wet...
 
The new(ish) Karoo 3's might be worth a look as well; much better than Tourances off-road, and although the rear wore quickly from new it looks like it'll limp to 6k miles while staying legal.
 
hi - thanks for all the advice. In the end availability has meant I ordered TKC's again. Paid similar price to UK and they arrive on Tuesday!! they should be fine for the rides I will get this year and will pick up one of the other recommendations when I drive back to the UK.
To be honest a bit nervous about K60 in the wet - so many mixed reviews and have always been happy with the TKCs in past.
Any tossers coming through Brasov - dont forget to give me a shout!!
 
I only do 20% off road with anakee2's these have the best wear for me..now I'll be changing to scouts.
Just some care is needed in the wet.

I have just changed my front K60 scout after just shy of 16,000 miles - it was still legal (just about) and still leaning good. These miles include Alps trip (taking in Stella and Jafferau trails), 3000 mile trip round Spain (including Bardanas desert, 4 days on Aragon HISS and 4 days easy trail riding in Extramadura), comuting on fast A roads (wet and dry) and sunny day potters and blasts (more pottering these days :D)

I used tourances for years but wanted something a bit more off road orientated and haven't regretted my change.

Really happy with the K60s - need to be careful in the wet until they are well scrubbed in, then (for me) just as good as tourances.

Look the biz too ;)
 
I had good service from the older K60's - however had heard that the new strip in the middle allows for a few "backside-clenching-moments" in the wet on tar..........

...... so I've just fitted a set of MITAS EO-7 Rear and EO-10 to the front.

So far only done around 700 miles - but really like the road holding and very nice on the dirt......... however do find (obviously) that they are a bit noisy on tar (mainly the front)

tread similar to the older Heidenau ?
