Katoom 950 Adv bike - how good it really is

id pick a hp2 over ktm, well for a little more reliability,

but the ktm adv is cracking off road, seen what both gsa, hp2 and ktm do in the right hands its awsome.

for me, grrr as a huge bmw fan, off road only ktm wins, but as dual sport on and off road with 2 up potential and huge mile busting ability im between the trails i think bmw wins, but not by much.

if your 50 50 man that either bike will do.

but if you do more trails than black stuff then ktm all the way.

either way i cant afford any of them so my africa twin has to do

Oh by the way, i saw on lad a off road even 2 years ago smoke a ktm rider with an africa twin, skill means more than bike. a good rider on a gsa prob still beat me hands down on mx bike

for me i would pick the KTM as its lighter and the seat is lower to. so for the smaller rider like me and my dad then the 990 adv is better than the 1200gs.
( am only 5.8tall)
i have sat on a 1200gs adv and no way could i touch the ground, plus it has more weight.

my dad found the 990adv good off road and good 2up on the road. and i hope to get to test ride his bike later in the year.

I actually think the SE and Adv are pretty close... but I could be wrong

The SE is much lighter and more chuckable than the Adv.

It's also a lot taller and seems to pull better despite having the same engine, assuming we're talking 950Adv.

I've owned a KTM 950 Adv S ,2 950SE's,a GSA12,1100GS and 1150GSA.

The 950SE is still in the garage and I will never sell it.

Best bike I've ever owned by far.

The SE has a different sprocket set up to the Adv, hence the quicker acceleration but lower top end speed.

think the SE has a 16/45 set up. The 950 and earlier 990 adv had a 17/42, the newer 990 have a 16/42.

i changed mine to a 16/45 and it makes a bit difference - wicked acceleration and far easier off road.

+1 im on my second 990adv changing out the front sprocket to 16 does all of the above but also makes the low speed riding way better by moving the jerky throttle problem slightly up the rev range......

yep, i had the 16/42 as original but still find it a bit jerky at low speeds, the 45 made a big difference for me

Shows how well you can really ride a KTM 950 Adv and how much more potent it is than any GS

Awesome ridiing

back my hp2 anytime .....no prob moly

Ahem, Johnny, you started the apples and oranges with this matey :

And I still think it's fair to describe an HP2 as a GS variant, so there :P

I think I can speak for Johnny on this one when I say that you couldn't be more wrong as previously stated! :aidan

Surely, the 990/950 adv is an off-road/road bike, with a bias toward relatively easy off road bits but which in the right hands can be thrown about with abandon, whereas the HP2 is tailored toward heavier off-road use, but can be used on the road albeit more as a big supermoto?

I'd say the KTM Adv is more comparable to the 12GS/A, and the HP2 to the KTM SE.

Absolutely !!!

Except KTM didn't sell the 950SE at a silly premium over the Adv unlike BMW

My opinion is that as a 'proper' Dual sport,50/50 go almost anywhere(tarmac/trail) with decent pace, the 950adv is perhaps the best compromise.Don't get me wrong, there are many bikes out there which will be easier to ride on real hard stuff just as there are bikes out there that will ride the tarmac better but for a single do it all bike,I'd choose my 950adv.

If you're more concerned with how much better it eats the miles on tarmac, get a Yamaha Fazer 1000 or even a Goldwing,or if you find a bike too much on the trails, get something smaller. Horses for courses, choices depends on abilities/geometry for comfort to use the weapon of choice.

....not that I am an expert.

Of course, a GS rider would just go round it.
