Because you use the ignition many more times than the panniers.

Can not fathom out why you find keyless a hindrance. Walk upto bike jump in press button thumb the starter and away you go.

I have both on my GS but if I had to choose one, it would be Gear Shift Assist Pro. Every time.

I chose both (keyless & spokey wheels were free)(didnt take the spokes though!)
Initial thoughts, liking the keyless (chose to have it on my car too) comes with "plipper" to activate/de-activate alarm also.
GSAP not as slick as other bikes Ive ridden with it on (XR & RS) though why the RS should feel so much better with the same engine is beyond me. Are there any adjustments that can be made? Has anyone had theirs improved? Does it get better over time?
To me, Its taking too much effort at the pedal during (open throttle) upshifts.
I imagine after a long day riding, my foot would suffer.
First service next week so I'll register my concerns.

I had both on my previous GS. GSAP is great when used for fast road riding.

Keyless is actually a pain if you have the Satnav - you need to use the key to lock/unlock the Satnav, and then you have to unzip/zip your jacket to put the key in, instead of just putting it in the ignition and turning the bike on. So you have an EXTRA step to do with Keyless. And if you have the key coded panniers, then you still need the physical key. Keyless just means you lack the ignition keyhole to actually keep the physical key on the bike!

Also - there is one place in London where the radio interference is strong enough to fool the bike into thinking the bike has lost/detached from the key. It comes one once you've passed the area, but if you stop the bike in that region, it won't start up again. These kinds of issues show that the system still needs work. (if anyone is wondering, it's the traffic lights next to the cement plant just outside of the Limehouse Link tunnel...)

I'm about to order a Triple Black, and I will not be getting Keyless this time round. It's a PITA.

Are you implying that you remove the sat nav from the cradle whenever you park up? If so why the big deal about reaching into your pocket for the key.

I rarely if ever remove the nav from the cradle and when I do, having to dip into my pocket for the key is a painless excercise.

I've got both on my 2015 Adventure, love both. If I had to choose...gear shift assist!

I've got both, and I use mine for commuting to work in london daily, 1st gear you clutch it and the rest you just slam it up and down with your foot..... Easy! I thought it was a bit of a gimmick, but I find it much easier to ride.
Keyless is good as well, if you move more than 2 meters from the bike it won't start, as the key is out of range. I keep mine in my pocket, walk up start it and go, park it and put the steering lock on and leave it.
I had a gtr1400 as well with a similar set up as well.

Yes, I do remove the sat nav if anywhere in London. The issue is less parking up, than it is leaving. It's a lot easier to simply locate the key in the ignition each time than having to put it in your (zipped) jacket pocket and having to zip/unzip the pocket each time.

neither, keyless does not work on the cases, so see no point at all. Tried gear shift and found it clunky. I do a better job with the clutch and slight throttle on downshifts.

The Satnav mount is one daft design. It has a key but no security, that's 0.
Just grab and pull and its gone all €850.
I wouldn't leave it on the bike for a minute.
Keyless is a gizmo and we love gizmos, it doesn't matter a toss one way or another..

Is it really that easy to rip the nav off? I'd think the only way you could know was to have done it yourself or seen someone else do it.
To avoid misunderstanding I'm not accusing you of nicking Satavs, it's just an observation.
The lock mechanism is plastic so it will break but I think you'd need some time and a lever and you'd also damage the Garmin.

They key fob has to be within 1 metre for the steering lock to engage or release. They are not that daft....
