Hi all,

Using the power of social media I have complained to BMW regarding the fact that they only supply one transponder key with the GS range. They are looking into it, whatever that means. I did suggest they include two, or offer a second key at a reasonable cost......not the £165.00 I have been quoted.

Perhaps if a few more people commented via chat on Facebook they may start taking a bit of notice. It won't help me, but people in the future may benefit.

£165 is cheep for a manufacturers key, the last time I looked at a replacement one for the car it was over £1000 and if you wanted it coloured coded the same colour as the car that was extra.

Just because somebody has tried charging £1000 doesn't make £165 cheap

It's moving away from the point, I appreciate, but if anyone wants a spare, non remote or electronic key, to use on luggage etc then it is possible to order one for a few £10s simply by sending a photograph of your key to -

or

I used 'keys in the post' and recommend their service. It means that my BMW key can remain safely zipped in an inside pocket whilst the replacement is used to lock/unlock luggage and remove the satnav when needed

My point to BMW was that if my 5 series can be sold with two keys why is my bike different. I personally think it's a fair point. I also pointed out that I can purchase a cheap notebook for the cost of a key, the notebook will have a hell of a lot more electronics and features than a key.

I agree that the fact that only one properly usable key supplied is not enough. I would not dare to use that plastic emergency key to remove luggage or satnav or even to pop seat open. Two keys is a must. Someone needs to start a petition.

They could at least give you a proper normal key which would be cheap as it isn't coded!

I wonder how the bike would react if it detected two valid keys in range?

If you take a longer trip with lockable luggage, where are you going to put the spare key? Not in the luggage and lock it, I hope. So that leaves your tank bag (if you have one) or somewhere about your person - along with the other key.

Just a thought.

I've got a spare Keyless remote fob.
The day before i collected my new bike, the sales man dropped the key and it snapped the flick out key. So i was given a new replacement.
Anyway, Can the dealer code the remote to my new bike to have as a spare ?
be handy to have two. Although the plastic emergency key is enough to get you out of trouble.
And for the record. I love the keyless !

On a trip I have the smart key zipped into my trousers..never moves
I have the spare thin key in my wallet..in case I ride off without my trousers..
I have a cut key, from a "smart car" blank of all things, that I use to unlock panniers etc

Works for me.

With my K1600 I had two key fobs. I used to carry both on long journey. one wrapped in aluminium kitchen foil and it was ok.

When I bought my K1300s in 2009, BMW only supplied one key. When I complained I was given a spare.

I think it's pathetic penny pinching of any manufacturer only supplying one key.

They tried that for a while but dealers soon got fed up with customers complaining

Ok an explanation, sometimes being an old git I loose a key......however I know the spare is in the safe so I can still go for a ride. When I get home I invariably find the 'lost' key. It helps save my marriage as it's always 'her' that hides it.

Couldn't agree more. Bastards have already stolen the spare wheel and put a puncture repair kit in its place

They won't care about the notebook comparison. A notebook is not going to start your bike :)
