Keyless

They won't care about the notebook comparison. A notebook is not going to start your bike :)

Ok, the point I was trying to make, badly it seems is that there is a hell of a lot more IP in a notebook, screen, HDD etc, and I am pretty sure that if someone had the software and a dongle they would be able to start my bike.

Whilst I've not done this I found this key and was thinking of getting it cut and then adding the transponder from my plastic spare key just to have something that is more robust.

But a spare key that can be used as per the original "keyless" key fob i.e can be left in a pocket but still operate the bike, would be ideal. I'm led to believe that the plastic spare key has to be dabbed on the transponder unit under the rear wheel arch for it to work.

So BMW replied, and the answer was.......tough that's how they come from the factory. That doesn't make it right.

Spare Genuine Key

A spare genuine metal key from your local BMW dealer costs £22.00,just order by phone
No transponder so will only unlock boxes,SATNAV and seat (mines keyless)
Hope this might help.

My supplying dealer could not understand why I did not want keyless ride
As I have a tb lc gsa with sat nav and all the boxes one would question why you would want keyless

Why wouldn't you? What is the disadvantage?
Leave key in your jacket pocket. Get on and ride. Couldn't be easier could it? No more faffing with keys when you stop for fuel.

Of course it's not necessary but neither is most of the stuff on a GS.

Just a word of warning.......if you order your new GS without keyless..........it is impossible to have a keyfob to control your alarm and you will be stuck with having to put the key in the ignition to turn the feckin thing off.

(anyone who suggests that the keyfob from a K1600 can be programmed to the bike would be mistaken)

My point to BMW was that if my 5 series can be sold with two keys why is my bike different. I personally think it's a fair point. I also pointed out that I can purchase a cheap notebook for the cost of a key, the notebook will have a hell of a lot more electronics and features than a key.

I agree all my Euro cars come with 2 keys. I have multiple riding gear and like to leave a key in the pocket of the jacket I use most. However would like the security of having a spare key inside the house should I require. These are price well above the cost of replacement.

Is this a new thing, not being able to use a k16 fob .
Yes. My mates bike is a January 2017 GSA, so it's definitely the newer euro4 bikes.
Only option to have a remote fob for your alarm on a non keyless bike is to fit an aftermarket alarm.

Responce I got this afternoon fromBMW Motorrad UK.

"Good afternoon,

Thanks for your patience while I looked into this.

Our Keyless Ride bikes are sent from the production factory in Germany with only one remote control key, which is why you were only supplied with one.

The bike does come with an emergency key should something happen to your remote control key, but if you'd like a second key, there will be a charge for it.

I know this isn't the answer you were hoping for, and I'm sorry to disappoint you.

Thanks
Dan

Not the best response me thinks. Given the fact that Flippy key is so weak that it is only a matter of time then one will need a replacement fob/key.

So BMW replied, and the answer was.......tough that's how they come from the factory. That doesn't make it right.

Go into dealer go through all sales pitch letting them start paperwork to purchased ,, then ask for two keys . if answer is no, say tough will go to another manufacturer who will provide two keys. Oh and don't forget to say," tough we buyer likes two keys" and walk out. If enough customers do this, perhaps BMW may change tack.

I would have had I understood the tightwads only supply one key, I think an email to the MD of BMW U.K. Is in order, I think I will ask why I get two keys with my 530d, yet only one with my bike.

Thats like asking why u only get 2 wheels with your bike and 4 with 530d.

Thanks to this site i ordered a rallye today and armed with the knowledge i got a spare key and few other extras well discounted

How much other stuff are they chucking in to sweeten the deal? Add a 2nd key to the list or buy a Honda.

Sent somehow.

Having to barter for a second key for a new bike costing £15,000 ?
The world has gone mad.
