Keyless

No it will only unlock panniers sat nav and seat locks.

So what good is that then? I can unlock above items using plastic key if I was to be in trouble, not that I would want to risk it breaking inside the barrel. Point we are testing to make is that if you were to go with conventional BMW locks, you'd get two identical keys that will do all the necessary things needed, yet with keyless system you only get 1.25 of a key for an additional £300 as an option on top of the asking price of the bike.

You are now confusing me!
Yes I have a 2017 GSA
Yes it is Keyless
Yes I have a plastic get you home key
Yes I purchased a steel key from BMW
Yes I prefer metal key to plastic key
Yes I would like 2 remote keys
Yes in my opinion 2 keys should be supplied with bike
Yes I have e-mailed BMW re additional key
Was basically told I would have to fund my own
I have only tried to help others in obtaining a additional key by informing others of Ben Perrys e-mail address with his permission
So either use the information or don't use
The decision is yours

So you basically have been fobbed of (pardon the pun) and taken it as a final answer?

My point is, that your £22 key is as much as the plastic one but in different circumstances. One will last forever and unlock your boxes, seat compartment and gps, the other (plastic) will start the bike and do all other operations mentioned before if you are willing to take the risk. as a result you'll be carrying two keys at all times :blast.

I get your advice re: getting a key cut but for me it has no much use as I do not have BMW boxes.

So no need to get upset as I am only trying to get across my point of view. :comfort

Thanks for your reply
I see your point of view but BMW are not going to give an additional key FOC
So in the short term I can keep the remote fob zipped in a trouser pocket and use my metal key for boxes etc.
:augie

How's this logic?

Keyless ignition option:

Transponder key in trousers pocket. OK - you may have a hole in it and lose the key, but you still have the plastic key (see below)

Plastic key in wallet. OK - you may lose your wallet, but both that and you having a hole in your pocket?!

Non-transponder key use for luggage, seat, Sat Nav. OK - you may leave it in one of those and they steal the luggage, but they won't be able to start the bike and you will still have one of the above available to get you home.

Got my response. Its the motherships fault

Worth a try and time to get the wallet out!

Good Afternoon Mike

Many thanks for your email letting us know that you’re unhappy that your bike has only one ‘remote’ key and one ‘wallet’ key as standard.

The decision to do this was taken by BMW Motorrad in Munich and it applies to all bikes fitted with ’keyless ride’ worldwide (except the very top of the range K1600 GTL LE). By not including a second ‘remote’ key we can offer our bikes with keyless ride at the most competitive price possible.

Although your ‘wallet’ key looks very different to the ‘remote’ key I can reassure you that it also contains a transponder and is also able to start your bike. The procedure for this varies from model to model and is explained in more detail in the Rider’s Manual for your bike.

In addition, customers are still able to purchase a second remote key from their Motorrad Retailer if they wish.

For these reasons we’re unable meet your request for a second remote key free of charge.

We do value feedback from our customers and we’re always looking for ways to improve our product range. I have, therefore, passed your thoughts on to our Product Department.

I understand that this is not the answer you were hoping for and I’m sorry to disappoint you.

Kind regards

I know it's not the response that you wanted but you would think that if they replace for one customer then why not others?

It's a principal thing really, they offer two keys on K1600 bikes but only one on R 1200 range......

As I said the cost of the key is less than 1% of the bikes cost, 0.9% is pocket change in BMW corporation.

I've been using one key for my keyless bikes for nearly 3 years, with no issues. You bunch of drama queens!:D

You'll know better than me as you've had several GS's but hasn't this always been the case?

My 2005 GS came with two proper keys but there was a similar fuss made when WBM stopped issuing two keys from about 2006/7.... I assumed that they then continued only issuing one key (plus the placky one)?

I've got two metal and one plastic with my TC (2013).

This bike came with a folding key for the keyless, and a plastic key. I've never used the plastic key. Any more keys, and I'd be even more confused than I am now.:D

It's a corporate rip-off, the complete ruining of the ownership experience of an awesome premium steed sold at a premium price and a gross infringement of bikers' rights.

im glad you lads dont own enduro bikes as well for you would be going mental for buying 7k bikes and no bloody key for them ...:yelrotflm:yelrotflm

Now that I have his email address, I've emailed the MD of BMW to say that I only need one key, and that I'd like a refund for the second key. He'll like that.:beerjug::D
