A very obvious lesson learnt today (in retrospect)

Running on a stright road, the engine cut completly. I learnt very quickly how to stop the bike with no servos ( and how to use the long forgotten rear brake !)

I has stupidly clipped a big bunch of keys to the solo bike key and on the previous turn they must have nudged the ignition key slightly. the vibration of the engine did the rest on the stright (about a mile after the last turn) .Guess it would have been really scary if it had happened on the turn.

Solo key fron now on!

Ooopsie... I've always hated rattling keys on the bike - I even used a bit of bluetak to keep my alarm fob from moving about on my GSX-R....

... But I've never heard that they can switch the bike off! (Admittedly the BMW key turns very easily!)

This happened to me!

New bike, in France, just stopped! Fortunately on a quiet road. Yanked clutch in and coasted to a halt. ( I did stupidly try a clutch start) Nearly through me in the fields.

I had an alarm fob on the key ring and can only think that the fob caused it to 'switch' off without warning.

When in the middle of nowwhere all sorts pass through your mind .

So if you have anything on the key ring take care!

Frankly the last place I'd put an alarm fob would be on the bikes key ring. Unless its one of the Meta ones where it's integrated into the key so that doesn't really count. Delicate electronics being bashed around in the breeze plus any precipitation that's around

I always keep my alarm fob in my pocket. I confess I have been slightly worried by how easily the ignition lock on the 1200 turns, this confirms what I was thinking. Mine's never turned off by itself but I can see how it could happen.

When i was picking new 1200 up , dealer told me never to have any other keys on ring with ignition key as"it could affect chip"

1984, Yamaha XJ550, regularly switched itself off, if I had more than one key on the fob, since then only have keys no alarm fob.

Not a new problem FWIW.

Ignition off.....

Washed the bike and then went for a ride. On the motorway - 70-75ish and passing a car - relaxed and at ease with the world. Looked down at the info screen but the bottom figures were difficult to read because water was laying there. Nothing better to do so I reached across with my left hand and to remove said water. Having been successful with this hazardous technical task, I returned said hand to it's proper place but..... before it got there, the bike ceased to run. I had turnrd the bloody ignition off !! No big deal reading this on the forum, but a little more disconcerting in the lefthand lane (Norway people) of the motorway....... Yes, the key turns very easily......
