Good weather Iain. I hope it continues for you. Last time I was down that way, it was pishing down. Made no odds to the backerei I popped into, dripping wet: "Come in. No problem. What would you like?" Germans know how to treat bikers! :thumb2

Day 1:

Thursday 25.05.2023:

186 glorious miles in hot dry weather – absolutely brilliant!

Home to the Lecht and then Braemar and a gorgeous ride to Glenshee then Dundee for a free coffee at the new Ducati dealer. (Did I mention I had a Ducati, or two?)

Lunch at the Pit Stop café along the road and then on to Eskbank to my daughter’s house.

Day2:

Friday 26.05.2023

0 miles today as my bike was chained up to prevent thievery from Posh Pete’s neighbours!

My lass is 40 today so it’s all birthday stuff you don’t / want to know about.

Day 3:

Saturday 27.05.2023

423 miles today to stay with a very kind gentleman, and his family, who gave me dinner, b & b in his gorgeous home.

Day 4:

Sunday 28.05.2023

421 miles today and I ended, not to my plan, in an industrial / shopping area north of Colmar, France. My last 100ish miles were in 25 – 28C heat and I was still wearing my year-round jacket and I was cooking!!!! If I’d been sensible I’d have had a stop, re-hydrated and taken the jacket off but I wanted to get to Ribeauville as I was getting tired. I got there and visited c. 6 hotels and they were all full (as was Kaysersberg and some inbetween). I ended up at a less than great place half full of refugees, etc. Being a Sunday (Dimanche in French for all you smart people) everything was, by the time I got there, closed! I managed to find a place and drank a few shit lagers and went to bed. |I’ve had better days.

Day 5:

Monday 29.05.2023

249 miles and I ended up in Garmisch (as per plan).

France to Germany to Austria and back to Germany again!

An absolutely gorgeous ride through loads of little villages using a lot of D and B roads – stunning countryside views. Hot and no clouds definitely helped!

Garmisch is a very, busy tourist and expensive place. It’s very nice but I don’t need to come back here again. However, they do have Weiss and Dunkel Weiss bier so that is DEFINITELY a bonus!

Are you planning to return to the UK before Aug, or are you you out there for the duration ? !!

As if I'd do such a thing - shame on you!!!!!

I'm back at the end of June and then back out again, on the Multistrada, early August to meet you & others.

If I had friends, or not, over there I would have stayed in mainland Europe.
Do you know anyone I could stay with over there?

Ahem…

Your comment from Picos June 2023 thread:

This is a new one on me - I'm booking a hotel before I arrive!

If I ride with an adventure spirit such as yours, try. When stopped for lunch, I log on on to hotel booking app and with rough idea of knowing wheee one will be destine to get to by the end of the day, go ahead and scan the are for a decent hotel. No need to book months in advance but at least by lunch time same day is advisable.

Enjoy your jaunt.

Day 6:

Tuesday 30.05.2023

About 120 miles today (I’ll check later).

Garmisch to Livigno, Italy.

I left Garmisch after a great breakfast at about 08:00 (photos will come soon via phone) and rapidly found myself on the Fern Pass to Austria. Lovely road and, again, gorgeous scenery. This rapidly put me on the B179 and then the B189 to Imst – lovely. The B171 to Landeck was equally scenic and then the B180 / 27 took me to Zernez. After this I was heading to Livigno on the 27 (Ofen Pass) and then the 28. However, I suddenly came to a single vehicle wide tunnel wide a red traffic light at it. After c. 8 minutes it changed to green and I could go into it (and hope nothing came towards me as there was NO passing room at all). About 2 miles later I came out into sunshine and a gorgeous view of a (looked newish to me) concrete dam (this is now Switzerland) and it’s a toll road to get into Italy. The lady wanted CHF13 for my passage but I only have Euros with me so it’s plastic money to the rescue, again! This was another great road and we varied in height from 3000 – 5000ft. WOW!!!!

Now settled in Livigno in a hotel we (my bike and me) have stayed at before. There are a lot of places closed as there is still the trait of skiing areas closing May and some of June as they want a break between winter and summer – this is one of these places.

Tomorrow I’m heading to Iseo.
