Khulu's Tour 1 2023

Meyrueis about 25 miles away in the Jonte Gorge is a better place to stay in that area. Plenty of restaurants to choose from with tables put along the riverside

Yes, Iain, check out of your hotel , put your clobber back on in the rain and ride 25 miles. It’s better there !

Day 19

Tuesday 13 June 2023

248 miles today.

I started the day on a balcony road along Gorges du Verdon and this time I was on the north side of the lake and it seemed better, to me, than the southern route I'd used before.

I wanted to see the Roman amphitheatres at Arles and Nimes at the aqueduct at Pont du Gard.
I got within 0.3 miles of each of them I had to park / abandon and walk the rest of the way. It's 28C and humphing a heavy and full tag bag didn't appeal to me and neither did leaving them on the bike so I didn't see any of them!
Some drizzle early then warm and dry and sunny until the last 50 miles which happened to be a very wet hill climb up, over and around 3000ft. to Florac. At that height I was also in cloud so not my ideal riding conditions.
While walking about Florac (it didn't take long) I saw bikes coming in from a different direction marked from Nimes so maybe I need to check my satnav criteria.
Weather still looking changeable for the next few days here as I head along Gorges du Tarn to Millau.

Also worth a visit if you like archaeology, is Glanum at Saint-Rémy-de-Provence. The site dates from 600BC.
All of these places best done in the spring ;)
There is also a campsite at Pont du Gard, almost on the river, that makes a good base for the area.

Better weather thus morning but I'm heading west into thunderstorms later, apparently.
Lovely.

Looks nice 👍.
Did you have a close encounter with the thunderstorms?

Ah, that’s a bloody good reason then
Annoyingly, the food there was the reason I booked it(..our first time at the Hotel, my wife loves good food...I'm a meat and 2 veg bloke I'm afraid) She wouldn't go and eat on her own at 8.30pm while I frolicked in the pool tho.

Yup,great food there.
Obviously you need to eat early but I quite like the timings in northern Spain.
You can get back to the hotel at 5 ish, go shower and change and still have a couple of hours with a beer or two or large gin and tonic in this case, sat on the terrace before dinner.
