I'm still refurbishing the GS PDC but its slow going... waiting for bits from other countries 'cos the French have nothing, and if they have you cant afford it.

One of the things that niggles me with this and my last GS is that it was impossible to kick start it.

Is there something that must be changed in the electrics to make it spark better at no revs or what??
I did search the forum, but nowt was thrown up.

Cheers,
John

PS, I know the gaiters are not clamped:rolleyes:

Gone slightly overboard on the weight saving Dude. If it makes you feel any better I can't k/start mine either. The piston moves about 3mm with each stroke of the k/starter.
By the way, nice handlebars! What make are they? I've fitted some similar that I bought cheap in the states on my last visit. The mirrors are now much clearer now as the Alu bars seem to kill the vibes. The rebuild looks really good should be a beaut when it's finished.

The teeth sometimes break off the kick start quadrant limiting the amount of movement. Fecking useless things anyway. More for show than anything.

The only real use I can see is for turning the engine over by hand when you're setting the valves.

There is a knack to it :augie. Ive got one on my g/s and if I kick it all day I may grt one start. Flipfly, who I got it off started it on the kickstart every time. From other posts on here if I merember
Put it on the sidestand.
no throttle,
one kick to wake the coil up
second kick immediately to start:blast"

do this several times then say " oh feckit

go for a cuppa ( or a lie down)

Then push the starter button:D

You're probably right... little things like that piss me off though - it should work if its there...

But, as you say, press the starter button and my Nippon Denso starter will whir it into life:D

There is a lot of unverifiable conventional wisdom about the kickstarters.

The quadrants are reputed to be brittle and break easily , the gears on the shaft so soft that they spread out and rub against the other gears , spreading swarf throughout the box.

Then the ignition control module which is fitted to certain beancan models is supposed to switch off the power after 3 seconds, or something, to avoid damage to the electrics if you accidentially leave the ignition on.

Sort of like the load control relay does on injected bikes with a BMS unit.

Hence the reputed need to change the module or switch the engine off and on between kicks to reset it.

How much of this is fact I am in no position to say, but I feel there must be a little bit truth in there somewhere.

There is indeed a knack to it. I turn it over a couple of times using the kicker, then with throttle held open and when the piston has come to compression I give it a good kick and it starts. I'll admit it is of little use, probably only of use for those very hypothetical situations such as when in desert sand and with a buggered starter motor. Still the bike doesn't seem complete without it.
