Took Lil the 80 g/s out at the weekend, Forgot what a great bike it is, (Ive been using the 100 gs for quite a while now). Anyway..... Left it in the car park at Bude with the parking light on...:blast Flat battery when I had eventually got myself on the outside of a huge slice of carrot cake.
Thought about the recent thread on here about the useless kickstarters. Better try it I thought
put it on the sidestand, petrol on... ignition on then imediately one kick followed by a second and Bruummmmmm.
Bloody wonderful, works a treat. :D:D:D

I always found the kick start to work really well on my 75/6 too. :thumb

What is the best way to retrofit a kick start in a R100 gs? Mine doesn’t have one and I would like to have tat safety for African trips

Re retrofitting, gearboxes with the kicker come up on ebay.de regularly, you could just buy one of those and fit it. Also I believe some of the electronics on the ignition need to be changed but I'm not sure what exactly, do a search on the site and it will throw up a few threads one of which I'm certain refers to the electrocnics issue, it might be as simple as replacing the black box.

I asked whether A kicker was any good on 2 other BMW forums....concensus was that you cant spin the engine fast enough for the Ignition to work...Nice if it did ...I could ditch the electric start.

Iys a funny thing, Plenty of comments on this site and others about the useful or uselessness of the kickstart. I had a PD which I was never able to start. Flipfly who I got the 80 off used it all tghe time as the battery was past its best and I found it went without much problem. I think there is a lot in doing it in the proper order. Lovely when it works though, you grin for the fiurst ten miles.:D

My sucess rate is a bit hit and miss. Seems to be easier when warm and I'm sure if I persist in 'practising' that it will get easier as time goes by. A few kicks with throttle open gets fuel in cylinder and then ease the cylinders to compression with a few gentle prods , then with throttle wide open go for it with a big kick. My bike doesn't always start first prod of the button so not surprising that same should be the case with kicker. I'm sure a well set up engine/ignition should make it easier .

When it's warm, my R65GS starts first kick, occasionally requires a second. I am only kicking 27hp, so perhaps that makes it easier.

That was before I read of the difficulty some have getting their bikes to fire off a kick, so what am I doing wrong?

Best check the ignition trigger unit as the airhead repair manual on page 12.7 has :

"Version without kick starter - Bosch 0227 100 103 or Telefunken 12.14-1244 477"

"Version with kickstarter - Bosch 0227 100 116 or Telefunken 12.14-1244 478"

Dammit..I have a spare one number 0227 100 113 ( I wonder what it is off?)
Blue g/s is 20 miles away so can't check it...although it is harder to kick start than my previous sienbenrock g/s !! My current g/spd doesn't even have one fitted

THe links don't exactly state what it can only be fitted to I'll admit :augie

Looks like it can be fitted, best see how the bike kick starts with the spare, or not :D

Went into the garden and there was the wife face down and sunbathing in a quiet corner:green gri .........so what did I do?

Easy...decided to try a replacement black box to see if I could kick start the bike ....real :spank

I replaced the original black box 0227 100 103 with a spare unit numbered 0227 100 113. Investigation reveals the correct unit for a kick start g/s is 0227 100 116 and is a whopping £78 + vat P&P etc to buy:eek

All cleaned/fitted up...and she fired second kick:bounce1

Before fitting this spare box my g/s was neigh on impossible to kickstart !!

Some pics of the box..( not the wifes:eek: ) which is a lot larger than the original.

Oh, I didn't have any of the special gel for mounting the black box to its plate...what is it called and where do I get a pea sized amount from ?

So what's the knack to using the kickstart ?. Earlier post say's bike was on side stand, does everybody else do this ?. I once watched somebody with the bike on the centrestand and their left foot on the barrel / cylinder head whilst they kick started the bike with their right foot.
