Klunk at front

I recently became aware of a knocking sound from the Front suspension. Investigation showed it to be the Front shock, lower mount where it fastens to the 'U' bracket on the Telelever. I removed the bolt and note that the holes in the 'U' bracket are slightly oval. Tightening the (previously loose) bolt seems to have cured it, but this is only a temporary fix.
Anyone else experienced this ?
Any cures ?

Les,

bummer. I'm not familiar with the bracket in question (& my bike's not handy to take a look), would it be able to take a brass bush? That would be the ideal solution, otherwise I'd guess you are looking at replacing/refurbishing the wishbone.....

Funny you should mention this because I've recently become aware of a clunk as the front wheel hits the ground as the bike is rolled off it's center stand.
Mine's an '98 1100GS with Fournales suspension front + rear.

I've been unable to figure out what the cause of the clunk is and to be honest, I've not even considered the lower bracket being oversize/worn.

You don't say when the clunk happens, but it occurs to me that to get a clunk sound some things got to by pretty loose. The lower mounting bolt should by very tight and even with a bit of wear it seems unlikely that any movement would be sufficiently large or rapid to produce an audible clunk.

Just a thought but, could it be the brake pads rattling because you've no spring on then?

MikeO's suggestion regarding a bush is worth considering. However, the size and position of the braket'll make it difficult to bush.

The usual repair for refurbishing holes that have worn oval is to tack weld a washer of suitable size to both outer sides of, in this case the 'U' bracket and if necessary using a slightly longer bolt.
Thicker washers are better.

I get the clunk when coming off the centrestand. Also when riding on cobbles (I live up north !) or very rough surfaces. It all disappeared when I tightened the front shock lower mounting bolt, but this is obviously a short term measure. Just wanted to consider all the solutions.

If I go for the welded washers and the longer bolt, will any bolt do ?
