I know from talking to a couple of people in the East Midlands region, that BMW have stopped making instruments for older models & a few have dodgy/knackered Speedos

I mentioned this to a mate on of mine on another forum who works for Smiths Instruments - he came back with this :

Mick,

I have had a work with the directors and they are very interested in this project, we have had some feed back from shows over the years where speedo and tachos have been repaired and fail within a couple of months due to the age of the internal mechanical parts, what we would propose is to supply the electronic internals with dials and pointers led illumination also a template for drilling the rear case, this method work very well with the VW bay window guys.

The new gauges would then have a factory 12 month warranty.

The only thing is we would need a to borrow a workin or broken instrument cluster (speedo or tacho failure) for us to work on, this would then be returned to the customer. Failing that I will check Ebay uk for instrument clusters for R80 etc.

He's asked me to sound out if any interest, so I told him I'd post up on here - so please post up if you're interested & I'll put you in touch :thumb2

The instruments on my '89 GSPD are fine at the moment but if I have to replace them I'd certainly give new Smiths ones a look.

BMW still sell speedometers for some airheads. I bought a new speedo for my 1989 R80GS a couple of months ago. It cost over £300 which isn't cheap but by the time I paid £150 for someone to 'repair' the old one (which would still have been 99% old and worn) the new one works out at £150 more which can be off set by another £50 by selling the old one on eBay.
New electronic instruments sound interesting but surely a cheap GPS does much the same thing and the old broken instrument can be left in place for aesthetics.

Does replacing whole unit have an effect on resale value, mine has just gone and was going to repair over winter but given time constraints not sure if a new one makes more sense, suppose I wanted it to be as original as can be

I need to have the speedo for my R80 G/S refurbished. I was given name of Peter Bond from SE London. Does anyone have any knowledge of his work?
Paul.

Not sure about the quality of his work, but the few dealing that I have had with him.....well you could say, if he was a doctor, his bedside manner would need improving:headbat

Or, I have met some doctors who have the bedside manner of some mechanics I've had to deal with.
If the man can repair . replace, or replicate the speedo for a 100GS he's alright by me. I just won't invite him to inspect my private parts or sit by my bedside. Simples.

I used him three or four years ago to repair the speedo on my G/S. He packed the speedo in the wrong box and sent it to another client but did sort this. The repaired speedo leaked water in still. I wouldn't rush back. I was told a couple of years ago there are a couple of repairers in Germany who are twice as good and half the price but I have lost their names and addresses
