knock nock

had asimilar problem with my 1200rt.lambda sensor on colder side was down.is the silencer sooty?

Know it's not the answer you are looking for but, do you have AA or similar cover? get it taken to Ocean BMW Plymouth. Or find a local bike shop to do a simple compression test. One plug out, screw in comp tester and you will know if serious or not. Shouldn't be more than a few quid.
Sounds like ether a simple coil pack or may be as its noisy worst case a valve, particularly as you were loading the engine when it happened, lots of heat generated etc. If its a missfire due to coil pack you can get damage to lambda probe, and may be even piston and the cat if you keep using it.
Ether way I would give Ocean a call it's about 45/50 miles from Exeter, I wouldn't use the bike till I knew whats happened..
Sorry if it sounds all bad:(
Good luck.

Ok so dropped bike off at bridge motorcycles today
Problem is diagnosed as right cylinder running very rich and causing both plug to get wet (with petrol)

What would cause this? And how can we fix it? We dont have access to diagnostic equipment (its an independant)

Independant what ?

Tell them to try the some basic fault finding that you'd try on any vehicle if you don't have the correct diagnostics -
swop the injectors over; how is it ?
Still the same ? then swop the lambda probes over; how is it ?
Still the same ? then swop the coil caps over, starting with the mains; how is it ?
Still the same ? then try the secondarys ... And so on and so on.....

They stole the coils and plugs from another gs that was in the shop (show room) and same thing, i will suggestlambda sensor and fuel injectors. If that fails ill have to take it to bmw in weymouth i think

Cheers guys

ok so the independant garage doesnt think it could be the lambda sensor so saving me money and not checking

i dont live in exeter, but am stuck down here for a wee while. Is there anyone with a GS911 (am so buying one come pay day) near by that can help me read the fault codes (if there is one)

the garage isnt convinced it is cynlinder specific although it is definately more pronounced on the right side than the left.

im not convinced there is anything wrong with the left side still though, but as you have probably guessed, i dont know much about engines!

Did you listen to what Steptoe said at all ?? Pay heed to his advice, the sage has spoken words of wisdom.

The lambda probes are the same part regardless of cylinder location hence they are interchangeable. Its only an electrical connector to undo and then unscrew the lambda like a bloody big spark plug. Swap them over from left and right side and see if the problem changes between left and right cylinders:

If no different then the lambdas are good. If the problem 'moves' with the change of lambda probes its QED. A piece of piss and all of 5 minutes work for somebody to do.

If you need a new lambda probe, they are available as NGK/NTK parts rather than the same part in a BMW packet for twice the price.

When I had a lower coil fail last year, it killed the Lambda probe on that cylinder probably due to poor combustion/excess fuel.

some people just can not be helped.why ask for advice and then pay no heed to it.

Its not a case of not heeding advice
Its a case of
A) not being of mechanically minded so not Feeling able to boss garages around
B) not being a home so not having any tools to try it myself

It was already in the garage when this was suggested, plan is to get recovered home on friday (140miles) try and if that fails, chuck it in the back of me van and drive to bahnstormers and get them to plug in the diagnostics

thought id let everyone know what the issue was

took it to vines in g'ford on friday, firstly great service! will be going again!

secondly, it was the cable goign to the throttle body on the right had corroded and snapped AND a small stone in the throttle body stopping it closing off properly (or at least this is how it was expolained to me)

it also turns out that i have 6 months warranty left which i didnt realise so the repair etc was free :D

vines were very very helpful (considering they originally told me they wouldnt be able to look at it until friday and fixing it within an hour of arriving!) and kind!

Knock

Why on earth dident you take it to a BMW dealer? (official dealer),

when? originally? because there wasnt one near enough (considering i wasnt happy doing a 4mile drive to work with the engine making that noise) and wanted it fixed

or are you talking about vines?
