Over the last few weeks a knocking noise has developed on the left hand side of my 1150GSA. It's only done 40k so isn't high mileage but as soon as it's warm and at low revs/tickover I'm getting a definate knocking/tapping noise from the left somewhere. It has the frequency to get through my ear plugs easily but I can't easily identify it standing by the bike. I've checked the tappets and they're fine - it doesn't sound like that anyway to me - could be a cam I guess, but could it be the cam chain tensioner? I've got an R1100S with 150k on that sounds like a sewing machine next to this GSA - Can I get the left cam chain tensioner out without without having to undo the wishbone? Looks pretty tight round that area.

Anyway - ideas really if you have any please

Thanks

Jason

it could be the tensioner as there is an updated version and you can replace it without taking the wishbone off if you do a search the thread on how to the job is here somewhere:thumb2

Ta - that's the problem then. Wonder why my R1100S hasn't had it? Still - I'll order the bits and get it done ASAP

Cheers

Yes, its the tensioner - there is a fairly concise thread over on ADV regarding replacing it - pictures etc and step by step instructions - not a great job - check the hall of wisdom over on Baldy's site.

Good luck.

A word of caution.
Do your research and make sure you have the correct part numbers for the new style tensioner.BWM may have updated their parts fiches in the time since i bought mine but the dealers parts dept wanted to sell me the old style.

im sure i read on ADV that there is also an aftermarket type made by someone that is a quantum leap over the OEM
