08' 1200GSA just returned from 12K dealer service. Start the engine and it sounds like the biggest bag of nails ever. For about two minutes there was a very loud (and I mean loud) knocking coming from the front of the engine/cylinder head area. I could clearly hear it with my Schuberth S1 on so it was not a normal noise. It eventually died down and I took the bike out and it seemed to run but less sweet than before.

I'm guessing something that should be oil pressurised - wasn't. The bike has had the alternator recall done in the service, but other than that it should have been a normal 12K. Bit annoyed as prior to the service the engine was getting sweeter and sweeter.

Any ideas?

I'd check the oil level - if normal, have it back to the dealers.

Mine clatters after an oil change and valve check. For longer it I forget to fill the new oil filter before installing it.

But the garage should have test ridden it, so these issues shouldn't have occurred..... :nenau

I wasn't at home when the bike was delivered back to me and my daughter said the driver fired the engine up to get it up the drive and the motor stalled. Maybe it didn't like being started for 5 seconds and then shut down and left a day. I started the engine up this morning and it didn't clatter like yesterday, it just sounds a little rough as if somethings out of balance. After my ride last night it seemed hesitant on low speed pick up on slow corners. Hard to put my finger on it but after a service I had expected it to feel better not worse.

I emailed the dealer and will call today as there is still another minor outstanding issue with the TPM's they were not able to fix.

I had the 6k service done on my 2008 GSA recently, I also noticed that the engine seems to rattle more than it did prior to the service.I put it down to the fact that BMW dealers now use fully synthetic oil, which if I'm right in thinking is of a lower viscosity, and thinner than what was in the bike previously.
Anyone know why BMW changed to fully synthetic ?

I supplied the oil for the service as I didn't want synthetic. I gave the dealer 4L of Castrol Act Evo 4T 20/50 which is whats been in the bike since day one. I also noticed a slight low speed hesitancy on slow second gear corners which I never had before. Noticed the oil level this morning was way above the top of the sightglass so it's full to bursting!

The engine just seems to be out of tune slightly and rattling more than it was.

Having spoken to the dealer they would think its the cam chain tensioners. I think this was a one off as far as the loud 2 minute clattering was concerned. I'm just left with the feeling now that the bikes just not running as peachy as before the service. It sounds just like it did before the 6K service, after which it has been getting better and better until now. More snatchy at low speeds as well. Bikes going back to the dealer next week to have it looked over - this time I'm taking it there myself.

Did they synchronise the throttle bodies?

Im no expert, but I think this would mess up the way it picks up from low engine speed.
