Don't if this has been asked before but.. Came back to my bike to find a 950 Adventure parked next to it. I now have the touring screen and with that the bikes look of fairly similar size and stature. I wondered if anyone had experience of both and cared to comment?

Can't compare... I have the F800GS for dual-sporting and commuting and a KTM450 XCR-W for the nasty off road rides on the weekends. Pefect combination :o

OK not exactly what you asked, but I've ridden an F800GS and a KTM 990 adventure back to back on the same day. Both completely stock dealer test bikes.

The KTM is quicker, it's got a ridiculous amount of shove to it, very torquey and a completely different animal to the 800. It's a bit better at handling motorway cruising thanks to its fairly low gearing, and it's got a much better screen (Though you say you've changed yours anyway).

The 800 is more of a fun bike, less serious than the KTM if that makes any sense. they're both great down little gravelly back roads, but thanks to the weight the 800 just feels more at home there to me (though I'm no offroad god, never even seen proper dirt!). Also I found there was more feel in the suspension than on the KTM, which felt a really tiny bit like the 12gs in that it was beautifully stable but you don't get quite the feel from the wheels, it just plows through bumps without a care in the world. In terms of handling I thought they were really very similar to be honest, both have massive front wheels and masses of ground clearance, and both good fun.

The 990's fuel delivery is really jerky, the 800's much smoother in traffic, but then you asked about the carb fed 950 which I've heard is as smooth as you like.

Personally I fell in love with the little 800, I think it's a great bike. The KTM's just as good, perhaps better, though it's more of a serious bike, it's a bit of an animal. It's got more grunt and is a more practical tourer, but the lightness of the 800 means it's more fun down less travelled roads.

I'm considering one or the other, and some days I prefer the 800, some days I prefer the KTM. Both are superb bikes to ride, but at least this way you've got that nice comfortable BMW warranty and aftersales treatment (something that's helped me to no end more than once). That said, KTM's parts are supposed to be cheaper? Dunno.

At this moment in time, I think if I could just go into a shop and buy an 800gs, I'd probably do it. I would with a KTM too, but I'd have to think a bit harder. All in all, I'm inconclusive :D

I agree with Jonny L. I rode the 990 for a weekend; it's a brute. I bought the GS and love it.

Never ridden either but I'd have the KTM any day.
800's are going wrong already.

It's great to hear from people who have tried both. I love the 800. I rode it on the bmw level 1 off-road course before I got mine and although I had never ridden one before and had never ridden off road i found it so much fun - day 2 I even managed some air! It handles like a BMX!!! I used to have a 1150 adventure which was too big for me but I can imagine wanting to step up from the 800 in a couple of years but would never go back to the 1150s/1200s. Sounds like the 990 would be a good place to start.

Quite possibly yes. The KTM seemed to me to fill the very small void between the 800 and 1200 GS's. It's more of a lightweight scrambler than the 12, but a bit more of a tourer than the 800. It's got the 1200's power, it feels a little more actually. If you've got a KTM dealer near you it might be worth having a go sometime. I wish I had one near me. Closest one's 45 mins away and charges £20 for every test ride. It's a different world to the luxurious comfort of those well funded BMW garages, they love giving test rides

Hi guys, I currently own a 990 Adventure S which i am just about to sell for a F800gs (have deposit down) I have done 4500 miles on the KTM and i will try to summarize it now: Fun bike with plenty of poke, very vibey past 5000 rpm, terrible fueling at constant traffic speeds 30mph (unusable in 1st gear) though has got slightly better as the mileage has increased. Biggest gripe is the screen in a word F&**$^g awful - bought the bike to go touring with my girlfriend (much worse 2up btw) and I think twice about anything over 10 miles as my brain and ears can no longer take the unbearable buffeting/drumming even with earplugs - it makes my sight go blurry over 60 mph. Just cant understand Johny L saying the screen is better and the bike is better for touring, maybe stationary it looks more competent :nenau just read the windscreen disgust thread on ADV rider its quite a big thread. Also to big to take of road unless you dont mind dropping it.

Test rode the F800GS and liked it cos the screen is smaller meeing my helmet isin cleaner air but one things for sure i will miss the power of the big KTM.

Bit frustrated as the perfect bike for me just doesnt exist anybody else feel like this?

cheers :D

Oh the perfect bike doesn't exist, that's why we all stick so much crap on our GS's :D Mine's perfect for me now, and I'm still not 100% happy with it! Truth be told though I'm just bored and fancy a change.

I rode the KTM and found the screen good at motorway speeds, better than the standard 12GS screen (which I've fettled with to get right). The thing with screens is they're a very personal thing, dependant on rider's size, shape, and ride position. What suits me might not suit others :). KTM do a touring screen, not sure if you've tried that? It's not very expensive apparently.

Welcome to the forum by the way :beerjug:

And that is the most important point of all, which seems to be glossed over with generalisations of crap screens all round.

For myself, at 5'10" with a regular seat, I find the airflow from the stock 800 screen to give a very clean airflow. It hits my visor just above the chin bar but is very smooth and directional. I regularly do a 300 mile round trip at motorway speeds with no problems.

Having spent hundreds of £££ on my previous bike trying all sorts of extended, flip and vario screens its my humble opinion that there is a trade off - smooth air flow or buffeting. Taller screens may direct airflow away from your head but IME, they create a low-pressure vortex around your head that increases buffeting. I guess its a matter of what you prefer to live with.

I just have to convince a fellow 800 owner with the taller screen to give me a blast on his bike to see for myself...

I'll do a 990 vs 800 report in a week or so :augie

hope tae feck the 990 is better or I'll never hear the end of it from Her Highness:o

I agree, Dont get the ktm I have had my 990 for 16months now and hate it. Just cannot live with the jerky fuel delivery at 30mph its awful.

I've not ridden the 800GS but did try the 800S and wasn't very impressed but the GS may be a better application for the engine.

For the most part, KTM bits are cheaper. However, I have had experience of both BMW and KTM aftersales and warranty service and there is no contest. KTM every time. May vary from dealer to dealer, of course...

Biggest gripe is the screen in a word F&**$^g awful
For £90 or so the touring screen solved this problem for me but there is no perfect screen. I do still keep the wee screen on for all but touring as it makes the bike feel nimbler - all in the mind?

Probably the biggest gripe and one that cannot be ignored.

There is a fix
There are several...

So I've heard. Are you thinking about the G2 throttle cam (or whatever it's called), or do you know of another fix for it?
Try the following:

  1. Meticulous adjustment of throttle cable play to a minimum.
  2. (Some say) A 16t front sprocket - sounds daft but the theory is it makes the bike rev more for a given speed and thus more controllable. I haven't tried this but, in my experience, it's 30mph in 3rd or 20mph in 2nd at which the bike is most surgey so up-revving the engine a bit ought to help. You won't loose top speed, will gain acceleration and it costs less than £20. Try that with a shaft...
  3. The latest dealer map. Tends to come with a 15 minute idle reset and (possibly) a placebo effect.
  4. A throttle cam - again, not tried. If you're going to do it, do it before you put heated grips on. I.e. try the bike from new without grips and, if surge is a problem, get it and the grips fitted at first service. It's a workaround but many are satisfied at this point.
  5. Akrapovics and remap. (Not tried). The remap throws a lot of fuel at the problem and probably works (surge is often due to lean running necessary for Euro III and snatch is often due to shutting the fuel off on the overrun - which the Akra map does not do) but fuel economy is reckoned to be worse. Few seem to mind, though...
  6. Wings, a Power Commander and tune. My solution. Expensive but sweet. Nice looks, slightly better economy, noise to beat anything and a nice midrange. Bit more exclusive than Akras (for now).

Straight in at the deepend Akra's:cool:

Rock n Roll ain't noise pollution
