So the bike is now two and a half months old and I've covered 4,000 miles, did I make the right move?

For those who don't know I chopped my 2009 GSA in for the KTM on the 1st March this year, the GSA was my second 1200 and I'd previously had a couple of 1150's, all in all I've covered over 100,000 miles on GS's and I was getting a bit bored. I'd fancied a 990 Adventure for a while and after a test ride I decided to take the plunge. As I've already said I've now covered 4,000 miles in ten weeks and all for pleasure :thumb so I think I've done enough to have formed my views. Most of the miles have been two-up and mostly loaded with camping gear.

When I first rode the bike I thought the twin fuel caps were a real pain but I've become accustomed to the idea and as was pointed out to me I now no longer need to take the tank bag off to fill up and as I almost always ride with a tank bag.... I also wasn't too sure about the brakes but in reality you just need a bit more lever pressure than the GS but they do haul you up when you give them a good tug on a plus note the rear brake works which is a novelty after my two 1200's (neither had ABS or linked brakes) however, I prefer the lower lever pressure of the GS. The next thing I thought was that it wasn't going to be much cop on the motorway but although it hasn't got the same weather protection as my GSA it's fine, not quite as good but not enough of a difference to be of great importance to me. Fuel range isn't as good but that's not going to be a surprise to anyone, the KTM holds about 13 litres less than the GSA and it uses a bit more juice, I was getting 45 mpg on the GSA while the KTM fluctuates depending on use and varies from 38 to 42 mpg (figures are actual not from the computer).

Rider comfort is as good as the GSA helped by the narrower profile of the KTM, Blondie says pillion comfort isn't quite as good but she didn't notice any difference until we did a 1,000 mile weekend nipping up to The Highlands. Tyres are a bit of an issue with the first rear Scorpion being shot after 2,500 miles, I used to get 5,500 on the GSA from a Tourance, but a pair of Conti Trail Attacks should help here. Handling is better, much lighter with far superior suspension to any GS I've ridden, Blondie has also noticed the ride quality especially on smaller undulating where it really shines. The engine is a peach, loads of mid range, fantastic 'feel' and as an added bonus it sounds great too. I've fitted a pair of Fuel end cans which were made to order without 'Fuel' badges so they blend in really well, they are much lighter than the standard cans and don't retain anything like the amount of heat the original cat fitted items did. One item that did have to go was the standard pannier frames, I have a pair of 45 litre Zega Pros and I loved the sloping forward look of the boxes but I was running out of ground clearance which will never do :D a set of Touratech frames sorted the problem and gives over 3 1/2 inches more clearance and since fitting them the boxes haven't touched down. I fitted a Scottoiler from day one and after a bit of messing around with the flow it works really well with the chain only needing one slight adjustment so far.

The KTM suits me down to the ground and I'm really pleased with my choice, I'm having bucket loads of fun and really enjoying my riding which after all is why I do it.

Lucky sod!! had mine 7 weeks and only managed 160 mile, must try harder. Anyway, similar story, F800GS to the 990 and i love the change.

Pleased to hear you're enjoying your new toy. I didn't think you would be disappointed.:thumb2 Any plans to take it off road?

As you get some miles on you'll find it really frees up :thumb

Off to Sweden, Finland & Norway at the end of August so will probably see a bit of gravel then, other than that not really.

990

Good write up.

I too have owed many BMW's but fancied a change myself, chopped my K1300 R for my Adv, what a different bike.

But I love it, so easy to ride, Ive put a few bits onto mine and I like the Ergo seat a bit more than the standard, bits are cheap in comparison to BM bits I guess you could say 50% cheaper for the bolt on bits like screen and seats tank bag etc. Love the KTM just wish they had a dealer network like BMW, but I guess thats were the savings kick in.

Enjoy.

I'd be interested to hear how you get on the trail attack tyres if you get them. I was hoping to put a set on my Super Enduro today for an up coming road trip but no where had stock. Had to go for the Sahara's again, the last rear only lasted a few thousand miles.

Dellis, enjoy your new ride sounds great fun, you probably need a new lid now!! :thumb Good to meet you in HG today :beerjug:

Put a set on mine about 1500 miles ago. Tyres before were 908 rear and tkc front, plus the usual scorps. Really good tyre on par with a tourance if not better. Use it daily in rain and shite no probs. Rolls edge to edge really smoothly and loads of grip, wet and dry. Got mine for an Austria trip and am really pleased. Miss the 908/TKC mix, love the look. Rear 908 last 4.5K TKC half worn on and off road (loves to squirm out of corners :D)

Trail Attacks are available from Tyre Tec. I've just ordered a pair.

Just chopped my 09 GSA to for 990!

Dellis,

That's a great summary and I totally agree with all the comparisons made.Picked mine up on sat and managed to get out today in the good weather to knock up 200 miles. All done in the Yorkshire dales with my mate on his GSA.

Averaged 42 to the gal today but still running in so keeping below 6500 rpm. Needed something a bit more funky and nippy than the beemer and I'm not disappointed. Got twin Akros fitted and remapped and the sound and grunt is pretty :cool::cool::cool:

Off to Switzerland next Thursday and it's 1st service is getting done on Wednesday. A couple of niggles though, the rear preload dial is locked solid and its not going to budge. Think someone has decided to wind it fully up in the showroom for fun! Also the the hand guard is split, dealer will sort both though:)

So after my first decent ride out, the grin factor has returned :D:D. Not sure about the seat though for the 3000 mile jaunt around Europe

Time will tell:thumb

Cheers

Richie

Bollox!!! Too late because I had the Sahara's fitted on Friday.

I will try them next time because I'm fed up with changing rears every few thousand miles and I have heard they are much better on both wear and grip.

i am sorely tempted to get a 990, I keep looking at them. Daren't have a go on one because I might get hooked.

Could you all please stop talking about them.

I find the seat is pretty comfy helped by the bike being narrow which results in a more natural sitting position.

Go and have a test ride :D

Put the Conti Trail Attacks on this evening, rear went on a breeze the front was a real bugger, narrow tyres with tubes are always a bit more difficult than wider rubber. Had a run out, only about 10 miles, they seem a bit more eager to turn than the Skorps but time will tell. I'm going to work on the bike tomorrow which is around 100 miles round trip so that should give me a better idea.

Dave

Well I managed work and back on the bike, the tyres are fine, they turn quicker than the Skorps but have a much more robust construction with less sidewall 'give' so make for a harsher ride with similar tyre pressures, enough difference to need revised damping settings but I'll work on them. 'Be interesting to see what they're like when it rains and how long they last, I particularly like riding in the rain and I like to do plenty of miles so these are key points for me.

Dave

A better mix of tyres for the Adv if you still want to do some off road is Mefo Super Explorer rear and TKC front. The Mefo is along the lines of the Scorp but slightly more aggressive and guys reporting mileages of 7500 ish from them. They feel good on the road too.

Interesting. I sold my 990 Adventure, and have moved to a Bavarian tractor 1200gs.

They are very different bikes. The handling on the ktm is far sharper imho, and despite the common comments about ktms being uncomfortable, i concur with the comments above and never found it so, i went right across europe austria and italy and it was fine.

Tyres i used the scorpion at and found then very good. Certainly no issues in geting the footpegs down :)

I liked the twin tanks too, just a pain at service time. And that was the thing for me 8000 miles between major services (valve shims). Also 35mpg. And the cost of the servicing (i did the intermediate 4000 mile services - 54 fittings to take off and replace to do an oil change btw) because of the labour involved is £450+ a pop every 8000. Oh and thevtank range was a bit frustrating too

Fantastic fun, brilliant to ride. If i were financially loaded i would have kept it though.:rob

The tractor is dull to ride in comparison, but its early days and i ve not done any major miles yet to give a fair comparison

I was amazed how many gravel tracks there are in Sweden. Last year, a mate and I just set the satnav for a distant town and 'shortest possible route', and the route took us down Km after Km of great dirt roads. Over big distances, we probably saw max 35% tarmac.

Enjoy it :thumb
