KTM are Toast ?

IIRC KTM did have an issue with an oil jet being too narrow and jamming with debris from clutch wear, at least on the 790 Adventures. Lots of vocal people on YT. Think KTM refused warranty claims as they said it was user error 🙄

Wrong type of oil :)

But how would clutch debris get past the oil strainer AND oil filter? Seems an unlikely cause to me

No idea of the details but there were problems occurring on bikes used hard off road. Problems with the slipper clutch breaking up I think. There's a clutch oil jet which I guess is passed first?

I doubt that. Logic says the oil jets have to be positioned after the oil pump surely. The filters are before the oil pump. Maybe I'm missing something. :duno

I love KTM and can't ever imagine going back to a BMW despite their mishaps. That said though, I don't think these cam issues have helped their reputation thats for certain.

Complicated by not being able to sell Euro 5 bikes in Europe after the 1st of Jan which effects the 1290's if not already registered.

They have until end of 2025 to seel Euro 5 bikes, so could dump a load here, but yeah, who'd pay much for them???

I'd buy a 2017 - 2024 bike, if I did not already have one - although mine is "for sale" at the right money, and will be kept if not, for what it is worth now, £7500 fully loaded (about £8.5 - £9.5k in dealers - altough they don't seem to be shifting at the higher price bracket) it's a lot of bike, but in that config only stands me in at £15k from new, and its 6 years old this month - and lost under £8k, mate lost almost the same on a fully loaded GS in under 2 years!

Happy to keep mine, generally the 1290's are fairly reliable, I have bought a "race on" switch and fuel filter set - probably the 2 things most likely to stop one of these dead, and grabbed them with 25% discount - and also makes sure any stock wobbles don't get in my way :-) and it would last me another 6 years I am sure, enough of these made (too many - Ha!) for parts to be around for a while and 3rd party support, lots of dealers with tech's that know then and a KTM version of David Silver would soon be raking it in as a specialist parts supplier.

If they have a "Fire sale" of epic proportions I might grab a new one, or maybe a low mileage 23/24 model at the right price, but you'd be an idiot to pay anywhere close to BMW / Ducati or even "old KTM money" for a bike where the firm may yet still go bust, and with KTM's record of "standing by" customers even in good times being a bit shit it's a gamble.

But if a 1390 Evo appears at £10k i'd have it, when all the new engine tech fails I'd just stick an old 1190 lump in it.

There you go then.

If you add a bit of clutch failure that block the filter(s) then that's even less oil pressure to lube the cams. All sounds plausible doesn't it.

I wouldn’t touch a ktm with a 10 ft barge pole,
Their parts back up for older bikes is dire,
Essential parts obsolete and discontinued after a few years,
It’s been bad enough for the last 10 years,I’d put no faith in them going forward.
After all the troubles my mate had with his 1290 I wouldn’t either. He describes it as both the best and worst bike he’s ever owned. They actually bought it back off him after they failed to rebuild the engine correctly/successfully about 3 times. Amongst all that his S10 hit 100k untroubled miles.

That's a good reason to buy in this upcoming fire sale, the parts backup was shit when they were north of £15k and in 10 years you would have no parts availability, so when they come down to £10k next month you have the same parts backup, basically all the shit in the warehouse right now will end up somewhere.

Warranty on a lemon is the biggest fear IMHO, and in some ways a low mileage 23/24 bike may make more sense as it has done a few miles and proven not to have been a "Friday special" and with financial woes I would be a bit worried of how well assembled any new stock bikes are, bit missing, or wrong bits fitted, staff not giving a shit as their owed wages / about to lose jobs.

Gonna be winners and losers here, all KTM need to do is place some adds in Gamblers Anonymous magazine ;-)
