As I was travelling away today (before I got recovered back home) my charging light came on as the revs dropped below about 3K. Abit further on and a graunching sound came from the rear wheel area, so I pulled over, lost a bit of skin on a really hot rear disc - hence the recovery.

On arriving home, thought I'd check things out. Turned on the ignition, no ignition or neutral lights and only the top ABS light flashing. Bike started but no revs showing until about 3K again, ignition light came on and went out and the neutral light flickered feintly.

Any clues as to what's going on???????

(I wont be responding to this mail until I get back on Mon / Tues as I've chucked everything into the car and at 0400 tomorrow I'm hooking the trailer tent up and going off to a sidecar rally sans sidecar & bike.)

Check the wiring loom from the indicator lights (to be clear - not the indicators) to the connector block. There's four or five splices in the loom and over time as water gets in the connections rot out. Happened to me about a year ago, the whole lot went out. Simple enough to fix once you get the loom out, don't cut the sheath, just peel off the tape each end and pull the sheath down (ooh er missus!). Don't be tempted to pull on the wires to check if they're still connected. Try to keep everything in place as you do it so you know where they all go when you remake the connections. Following good advice from Steptoe, leave off cable ties when you replace it all, or at least don't pull 'em tight. I've got some pictures of it all at home but I won't be there 'till end of May so not much good I'm afraid.

Not sure if this is linked to the brake problem, but indicator light symptoms match my experience.

Happy hunting Jim :bounce1

This afternoon I had a look at the poly v belt and it looks like it is starting to shred itself on the front edge (confirmed by little bits of belt in the bottom of the casing) - would this be causing lack of lights if the belt was slipping, but on higher revs making them work again??

(It's possible that the lack of one ABS light might be because the end of the rear sensor has been ground away - along with some of the rear caliper, by the disc  )

It sounds like the big bearing in the drive has collapsed. How much play can you feel in the rear wheel?.

Having put the bevel box back in, but not being able to go for a run as I'm still waiting for an ABS lead, I thought I'd start looking at the lack of lights.

Well, I started to remove all the bits at the front to get at the instruments etc., then got fed up at finding nothing obvious. After reading through the manuals, thought I'd pop back into the garage to see if the gear indicator was working (it was), then for whatever reason checked the brake lights (couldn't do it before as both wheels were out - And still can't on the rear as the caliper is not re-fitted yet) and there wasn't any. Checked fuses and #1 blown now replaced and all working.

Strange that with that fuse blown, only one (top) ABS light flashed, no neutral light, ignition light or rev counter until revs were above 3K and then the neutral light flashed in time with the ABS light, the ignition stayed on and the rev counter became intermittant.

I love my GS  :augie
