I have posted a few times regarding my problem with noise with the standard 1200 GS screen. I have read many other threads on the same subject and decided to try the Laminor Lip as its one of the cheaper options and also was available quickly (took 5 days from ordering to arrival in Singapore).

Last weekend I fitted to my bike with masking tape in order to find the best position. I'm 5'9" and suffer only a wind noise problem, no physical buffeting.
I tried the Lip is a couple of positions about 2.5 inches abouve standard screen and 3.5 inches. Frankly I can't tell any difference than before, still same old whistling wind noise and anything over about 50 mph. I'm disapointed as I was expecting at least a maginal improvement.

In the end I did not fit it permantly, I've decided to try again when I have more time for experimenting.

So would appreciate any comment from others who have fitted one to their bikes.

Thanks,
Dean

I have one on my 1200GS. I got it to smooth the air and stop the buffeting which it did successfully. Not sure how much noise it blocks out because I installed it soon after I bought the bike.

I nearly got a laminar lip, but as I needed something in a hurry I got a touratech screen extension from a nice chap on here instead, though I'd imagine they're not far off in terms of what they do. It got rid of that nasty wind noise straight away.

Best thing you can do is play with the stock screen height. Get the thing attached, go for a ride and pull over lots to adjust it. I'm 5'11", and ended up having the screen on it's highest setting. Then I found I got a load of buffeting, but that was coming from below so I fitted some winglets. It's superb now, I can do 80 mph with my visor up easy.

If anything it's too good, you almost forget your on a bike! I cut my teeth on nakeds, so when I'm just going for a burn in the summer I tend to drop the screen to lowest and remove the extension, good for getting the bugs in your face :D

P.S. If it's as noisy as mine was you really should try to wear earplugs til you get it sorted, it can be pretty damaging to your hearing.

thank Mick, Jonny,

I too always had naked bikes, and in recent years harley's with and without big screens. But I've never had anything as bad as the whistling wind noise I get from the GS screen. My helmet dosent help, being a nolan flip up, but this weekend I went out also with my sone tight fitting Arai S-4 and still the same.

I'll give it another try next weekend (traveling now) and tray different positions of the lip and screen. On an otherwise great bike this is an annoying problem.

thanks again.

I've had the laminar Lip on mine for 2 seasons now. After installing it I was able to raise the front of the windscreen 3.5cm with a homemade piece of lexan which sort of mimicks what tobinators do. It allows the shield to have much more angle and comes closer to me. Have the stock adjusters in the second highest position and it brought the turbulant blast from my chinbar of the helmet to just touching the top of helmet. Much quieter and doesn't make my head bob. Shield shakes a bit when behind semi's still. Am 5'11" and ride with seat in lowest position. SG

Free Laminar Lip!

If anyone wants a free Laminar Lip to try there's one just north of Hartest (Suffolk) off the B1066. Binned the GSA12 there on Saturday on a bend doing around 50. Hit a patch of derv. Bits of bike everywhere. Found most of them but not the lip! It's still out there somewhere but I couldn't find it. Other than a bent bike and a shredded Rukka no real harm done. Don't you just love diesel?

why don't you just wear ear plugs when u ride your bike..........sorted

Not that simple I'm afraid, if this is the same sort of wind hiss I was getting, even my custom earplugs weren't much cop over 50mph. Without earplugs doing 20 was bad enough.

Or..............simply remove the screen! All noise and buffeting vanish - job done.

Failing that, if I want to keep out of the breeze I take the truck.

Jon P, having bought a BMW I had kind of expected the screen to function.
I agree without the screen the noise is reduced, but in Malaysia we have a thing called "monsoon rain" protection from that is appreciated. sometimes I do take the truck. But still expect BMW equipment to fuction without doing my hearing in.

A screen on a bike is always going to be a compromise - for some it will be too small, for others too big. BMW try and overcome that by offering a range of adjustability BUT, unless you get in a car you are always going to have issues.......your height, direction of wind, speed of wind, speed of bike, wearing a helmet, shape of helmet.

There are 'things' you can stick on the screen to make adjustments but they are only ever another compromise. Another well recognised solution is to use earplugs - for some reason I get a high pitched whistle at certain speeds and with a certain helmet for which I use earplugs.

Although my original comment to remove the screen was intended with humor - it is an amazing cure - and you do soon get used to riding without the screen.

I too find I get a huge amount of blast on my helmet (Schuberth C2) but I know the helmet is quiet in a pure air flow.

I've just acquired a spare screen which I'm going to cut down - take a look at this thread.

I'll post up the outcome when I've had time to do some testing.
