Trip Invite Land of The Riding Sun 28 Sept to 11 Oct 2028 ?

Some of you may have seen this thread and it got me and @grantmac thinking that we could do a similar trip only much cheaper renting a bike from here.

Grant mentioned possibly May or September but Chat GOT suggests October

I’d concur with that , as I travel to Japan most months .
Certainly September can still have temperatures in the 30s.

If it was October then I’d suggest 28 September to 11 October ,2028 , as those are my part time weeks .

It would also allow our first night in Tokyo to take in the Oktoberfest Fest which is great fun !

I’ll get a mod to move posts from the other thread to here.

Those dates would be start and finish in Tokyo so would need to arrive before then . I’d suggest arriving with at least a day to spare to limit jet lag due to the hour time change..

I can possibly get peeps tad cheaper flights but only saving 5/10% but including hold luggage rather than paying extra.

Wed most likely pinch the route off Compass that @snakebasket rode :

I’d agree with @grantmac that 6 riders with/without pillions is optimal .
I’m sure @Stevie4scoops will be up for it so that leaves 3 places

To rent any vehicle in Japan, you will need to present an international driving permit. Not as straightforward as just rock up, pick up and go as you would in Mallorca airport.

First idea for the logistics:

For those who don’t know, Japan has a nationwide luggage transfer and delivery service known as Takkyubin, you can send baggage directly to and from hotels or 7 Eleven stores to save you carrying them about, it doesn’t cost much and works perfectly this being Japan, we used it on our trip this year (y)

There are also large storage lockers in airports and stations

Could be a good solution to no support van (y)
Yep, used this service on the morning of our arrival at Haneda airport. Saved up lugging massive suitcases all day, suitcases have arrived to the hotel at the same time as we did. Most hotels in Japan do not allow you to check in until earliest 3pm or even in some instances 4pm.

I’d be up for it with missus in tow

As Martin kindly put details of a countrywide hire firm, I did a quick search, they do categories 1 to 7, 1 being cheapo, 7 being the top end stuff.

Cat 5..Honda X Adv 750, CB1000 Hornet SP etc with panniers and top box (No idea what they'd come with?) incl CDW appears to be c £1150

Cat 6.. a Ducati Desert X £1300 for 2 weeks. That's a great price IMHO. A Kawasaki Versys 1100 and Honda Africa Twin Adv Spt are also cat 6!
(Honda X Adv 750 is Cat 5.)

Cat 7 bikes - £1650 all incl x 14 days....GS1300, RS1300, Gold Wing DCT etc.

How did you get a price without forming an account and adding credit card details etc ?

Fees....it gives a list of rates...4hrs, 8hrs, First day, subsequent days then there is the CDW and accessories stuff....Hope I've got it right...
Ah, missed that .
Your figure look about right . 14 days on highest group bike is about £1445 plus the optional insurance etc.

Not wishing to pee on the gentlemans chips regarding the original organised tour of Japan trip report, but I reckon me and Mrs B can do 3.5 to 4 weeks in Japan incl bike hire and food and digs for around the same price as just me doing a two week organised tour...doing it this way really works for us as one of those once in a lifetime trips so a big thanks to you and Grant for suggesting this and starting the ball rolling....appreciating it is 2 years off and we are on day 1... :beerjug:

October 2028 will be good.
A lot of would have to go wrong for me not to be a man of leisure by then.

Of possible a new career as adventure traveller,

Wife and I were in Japan (in April of this year) despite being a bit of a marathon trying to get to see everything we wanted and could see in the given timeframe of two weeks, we thoroughly enjoyed it and absolutely loved the country. We did say we would return again… we both wanted to visit the north of Japan on our next trip as we only done Tokyo and as far south as Miyajima island.

I do believe that Japan has quite a few toll roads too, so worth taking that into the account when getting figures together for the entire trip.

Flights in cattle class are minimum £1+ return per person. Quite likely to be another £200 on top of that at this moment in time.

I know it’s a bit early but to enter Japan you will need to register on the Visit Japan Web site, once all your details are completed you’ll get a QR code to flash at customs, when we arrived in January we went through in a couple of minutes (y)

There’s nothing to pay so if you’re asked for money you’re not on the official website !
