Land's End Trial 2013

Mmmmm, bike is on Karoos, hopefully not going to have to buy a new set of boots.... Not got a roadbook holder either - may have to fabricate something. Not that I've the slightest clue how to use one mind. :blast

Ah well. :D

Starting at Michaelwood and entered class O or was it 0? Do I need to change that to something else?

JB and Ian, thanks for the info so far. :thumb

If I'm interpreting the regs correctly, it seems the legal (non Trials) 17" tyres are TKC80's and T61's only, in class C

I was wondering about Class 0 and after carefully reading the regs, it seems a slightly 'softer' easier option, with not all of the 'classic' harder hills being undertaken, like Beggars Roost and Sutcombe..............unless I read it wrong

If it were me, I would want to do the LE proper, with all the best hills

Pretty sure that Class 0 allows you to follow the full route :thumb2

Not by my reckoning, from the route list - looks like completely different route of hills and different from the Main Trial

Class O does follow a different route, although they can do a few common sections and so mingle with the other classes. All the other classes do the same route.

Class O is for those who want an easier time, for example on more fragile or heavy machinery, or for who the main route is getting a bit much (I have a mate who's been doing these events since the 50s and he recently moved to class O). I hesitate to say it's for beginners, because if, for example, you've done some trail riding and enjoyed it, the main route should be fine.

Have a look at some of the videos of this year's Exeter to get a feel for the severity of the sections - Simms, Tipley and Slippery Sam are as hard as it gets. There's no single track - cars do the same sections.

Dansin,

If you entered on line you've found a bug in the system as you can't start at Michaelwood in class O - class O starts at Bridgewater. Not to worry - I think you should be able to amend your entry on line. If not, contact the MCC. If you still have problems, give me a shout. I think the 'no changing to the main event' rule will only apply after entries close.

As I've noted above if you've done some trail riding and you have a decent bike (is that a 650 in your avatar?) you should be fine on the main trial - class C for a 650. Feel free to send a PM and we can talk it through by phone. Or contact the MCC's motorcycle PR officer.

W.r.t tyres - all I'll say is that I've entered on tyres that were not compliant with the regs in the past and the worst case is I was given a scrutineer's 'ticket' and barred from getting an award. That said, it's theoretically possible they could refuse you a start for non-compliant tyres, but the 'ticket' scenario is my experience.

IMHO it would be gutting to have a ride resulting in a medal then be denied it because of a ticket though so if you're bike is due some new tyres then it might be worth 'investing' in a compliant pair.

W.r.t roadbook - the MCC route card is just text with times and distance - no symbols as in other roadbooks. When I first started riding I followed a mate round. The problem with this approach is if you get split up, or fail to climb a section and you have to follow the 'failure route' to get back back to main route.

If all that sounds onerous then don't worry - we're not talking extreme sports here - it's hard to get a medal, but easy to enjoy yourself which is what it's all about.

As JB notes it's worth doing the main event with the classic hills, especially if this is one of those '100 things to do before...'. But IMHO these events are addictive so your first may not be your last.

Two other tips - be prepared for all weathers, and don't forget your tax disc.

Cheers,

Ian.

So would I but Ive entered O Ill have to see if I can change this

I've entered on the 1150 because I'm getting soft and was thinking about the 300 mile ride home

Good advice :)

On the tyre front - I would definitely use the specified ones as Ian says, it be a bummer to be in with an award only to be in eligible because of tyres

Don't forget actual MOT cert, in addition
to tax disc, plus your ACU trials licence at scrutineering - they seem quite hot on correct paperwork when I was browsing the regs

So should we be in Class C? So far we have 650 Dakar, and 1150 and an HP2...

So should we be in Class C? So far we have 650 Dakar, and 1150 and an HP2...

I think Class C for all of you (Wreford, Mav & Dansin) would be the best route and within your capabilities, as Ian has said
Class O seems a newer addition, since I last did it in the late 80's

Class O is for those who want an easy time, and only starts from Bridgwater. But it might be disappointingly easy, depending on your level of experience off tarmac. I once seriously considered doing class O in my standard drive to work VW Golf.

For bikes over 450cc doing the 'main' route, which you can start from Michaelwood, there's class C.

Class O or class C? I'm reluctant to advise one way or another as I don't know your level of experience, but the sections on the main route are also done by 2WD drive cars and regularly done by entrants on two-cylinder trailies. Going probably not much different to what you might find in a UK trailbike rally or on a days green laning.

Youtube is your friend and a look at the entry lists from previous MCC trials might help.

Cheers,

Ian.

I think all three of us are pretty comfortable on the trails so it looks like class C for us

Thanks :thumb

Simms is only in the Exeter.

My favorites in the LE are Crackington and Blue Hills 2.

Over the past couple of years there's been a group riding C90-like step-thrus on the main route of the LE. Worth looking out for.

Oh I got that wrong then, thought CLass O was introduced for Novice and 1st Timers, I would still enter Class O and it would be my 5th Event, just shows what a w@nker I am.

Found Class O to move on and Class C a lot of hanging around, don`t forget that JETBOILER,
