I have a HP DV1355ea lap top which was slowing down and now has
come to a complete stop, all it does now is tick.
i've done a hard drive self test which said "No IDE Device"

Does this mean i need a new hard drive ? :(

Possibly but not certainly.

If the laptop has an 'a' drive, download Powermax.exe from maxtor and make a disk, then boot it in the L/top 'a' drive and it will run a diagnostic test for you and give you a couple of options should the drive be 'found' a low level format can fix a load of h/drive falts but not all.

click on the link it'll take you to the download page.
