Las Palmas de Gran Canaria - early Feb - Wanted - Budget friendly accommodation

Hi Martin, how many routes / days are there in that? There is a central road that links to the Valley of Tears which has been closed for about a year - does your planning tool pick up on road closures?

Always amazes me that it can be c.15 degrees in the hills and then when you hit the south it’s always very warm.

4.
Was using MRA so don’t think it picks up road closures.
Just found them . The GR-605 and 606 are shut.

I’ll replan. Ta

Me and Mrs Ted went there a few years back. It's really easy to just use booking.com. Stop two nights in each place. Keeps it interesting.

Las Palmas is "White trash" British bars, egg and chips etc. And quite built up.

The interior of Gran Canaria is really where the beauty and culture lies. To old style Spanish villages, pine forests and beautiful sun kissed Mountains.

But you need a car or bike to access it.
When you say ""White trash" British bars, egg and chips etc." you are surely talking about the resorts on the south of the island of Gran Canaria.

The op is asking about Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, which is the capital city of the island. Here there are very few "egg and chips" type caffs, and even an Irish bar, in the Las Canteras area, but there are plenty of other local and foriegn restaurants.

Speaking of foriegn restaurants, there is a very good Thai behind the Reina Isabel hotel, but it is very small and you need to book. There is also a good Indian further down the road, and in the centre of town I can recommend the Rincon Libanes for very good Lebanese fare.

However, the op asked about hotels apartments. The NH and the AC mentioned earlier are both very good (I've stayed in the AC a few times).
The Reina Isabel, the Sercotel Playa Las Canteras, and the Hotel Cristina, all on Las Canteras beach, all look to be OK. I've stayed in the Cristina many times, it been taken over and modernised since and look very nice.

I've been going to LP for many years mainly in November. More recently I've been staying for several weeks in various apartments.
I can recommend using Living Las Canteras. Juan has a good selection of apartments of various prices. They can be a bit more expensive than some of the other providers but their service is excellent, and quick to respond if you need anything.

Agreed.
Las Palmas has a lovely old town and many nice bars and restaurants .
Nothing like the resorts on the south coast.

We’ve never been to the Canary Islands but are very familiar with mainland Spain in the winter so I was expecting Las Palmas to be similar. This trip is a bit last minute organised after we gave up on our usual campervan trip to Spain and Portugal because of bad weather. When trying to find accommodation Booking.com claimed that 96% of places on their site were already booked for our week (4-11 Feb) but we managed to find a studio in calle Venuzuela fairly near the centre at a reasonable price. We want to keep the budget down and speak hopeless Spanish so don’t really have too many objections to egg&chips cafes or Irish bars although hoping to have some time to explore the more interesting parts of town

Las Palmas is favoured by the Spanish for holidays. I like it's much more relaxed attitude and nice restaurants. quite odd to go from here in the morning and stop for lunch in the south and sit beside an English bloke in shorts and bird in bikini who have been sunbathing flat out during the day. very different and both can be equally good..

That's a pretty good location, everything you need is a short walk from there, the beach is less than 5 mins away with lots of restaurants and cafés, and the main shopping street is a similar distance with an excellent meat/fish/vegetable market on an adjacent street. There is a Superdino supermarket only a couple of blocks away.
You'll also find a few Granier bakery/cafés on Las Canteras and elsewhere, there will be one near to you. I recommend these for bread (especially their Masa Madre (sourdough)) and pastries.

Hope you enjoy it!

My mistake.... I get confused. There are seemingly hundreds of "Las Palmas" all over Spain and it's territories. It's difficult keeping up.

For Chas et al visiting Las Palmas,

Family Restaurant (on front beside Hotel Aloe Cantera - great service here doing typically fish (try the Dorada here) and steak etc. Good value
100 Montaditos - Cheap bar on the front which also does cheap bar snacks - 100 Montaditos - girls serving behind the bar may look at you as if you are the devil but it's a great place to sit pre / post dinner and watch the world go by.
Bar Regina on the front - nice spot for drinks or cake and coffee by the day.
Restaurante la quile - really good for fish and paella.
El Típico Español - good selection of all fish / steak etc.
Tierras Juntas - was recommended by Jen from Canary Ride as the best for pizza (it was). Italian restaurant that also does great fish and beef.

all the above are reasonably priced.

hope that helps

Can you explain white trash ? Or is that another word for working class people spending there hard earned having a good holiday 🤔 just maybe not everyones cup of tea.

You tell me. They're your words. Not mine.

Yes. I know what I typed. But YOU defined that as working class people spending their hard earned money. That was what you typed.

That is not my definition of white trash at all.
Ah ok and I'll leave it at that.

different strokes for different folks hence my post previously.

Las Palmas - much quieter centre of GC, quiet bars and restaurants on a lovely prom that stretches the length of the beachfront, frequented by Spanish holiday makers plus quieter ones from GB / Britain / Ireland / ROI / NI etc. Buildings are very grey and office like once you step in from the front. Bit more relaxed and not much sunbathing nor speedboats.

south of the island - holiday resorts. beach holidays, sunbathing on beaches, disco bars and lots of English speaking people and fewer locals. Noticeably hotter.

Having enjoyed holidays in both you take yer pic.

Mostly correct, plus there is a large contingent of Scandinavians who winter there. True there are no speed boats or jet skis (except those used by the lifeguards), but there is plenty of sunbathing (and beach sports) on Playa de Las Canteras and on the beaches on the other side of LP where the Marina is. 😎

Las Palmas is nice.
We had a night in Maspalomas last year and it was very eggnchips.
Yet get inland at all and the centre of the island is like rural Spain and absolutely stunning .
Looking forward to being back in 3 weeks .

I’ve finally got MRA to run on my iphone, I don’t know what the problem was - I thought it was too old. I’ve been using the route planner on my Ipad since last year and will make a serious attempt to create a route for our Alps/Provence trip in May but it seems daft me creating routes for Gran Canaria when there are already done by you experienced lot. I’ve no idea how you actually share routes but I’m sure someone will so please share.

Martin, how did u share last years ones as I'll do the same for the great one dayer I have on MRA.

Chas - I suspect we are all in the 'too old' category!!
