Las Palmas de Gran Canaria - early Feb - Wanted - Budget friendly accommodation

I’ve finally got MRA to run on my iphone, I don’t know what the problem was - I thought it was too old. I’ve been using the route planner on my Ipad since last year and will make a serious attempt to create a route for our Alps/Provence trip in May but it seems daft me creating routes for Gran Canaria when there are already done by you experienced lot. I’ve no idea how you actually share routes but I’m sure someone will so please share.
Here’s ours, which obviously start and finish at our accommodation

Thanks very much, I’ve downloaded them but yet to work out how to edit tham. And, same as Barry - how do you do that?

....... there is plenty of sunbathing (and beach sports) on Playa de Las Canteras..........
I should have added - I could have watched the young ladies playing beach volley ball all day, but SWMBO kept dragging me away! 🤣

lol. in November we were having an evening stroll and i picked a nice table beside the beach to have a drink and watch the sun go down.

unfortunately after ordering a drink, thus we couldn't leave, we realised i made a mistake and the girls on the volley ball courts would interrupt our view of the sunset.....

We’ve driven down to Barcelona in order to get a cheaper direct flight to Las Palmas, no direct flights from France (except Paris maybe) - seemed like a good idea at the time but sorting parking for our camper has been a pain because it’s 2.7m high, anyway all worked out in the end we hope.

A quick question for those familiar with Gran Canaria: they’re quoting 75€ for a taxi from the airport into town - anyone know if there’s a convenient bus or shuttle service?

Are you not familiar with Google Maps ? 🤔

Not caught the airport bus into LP but secured catch one from Vecindario which was further out

Looks like the number 60 is basically direct , with a handful of stops in or around LP.

Think the fare is €2.95 each . Buses take contactless .

The bus we caught which went past the airport but not into it stopped many times and took well over an hour. This looks much better and only 45 minutes ish

Our apartment agency arranged the taxi for 35 Euro each way. On the return trip, the meter was set and it showed a little more than this, but we were still only charged 35 Euro.

Check out this web page, I believe it is a forum for expats by an expat. It has loads of info about buses etc.
Check out the second tab at the top of the page, "Airport Transfers", I've used it a few times but not for the past few years, their current charge from the airport to LP is 44 Euro each way.

I have also used the express bus service mentioned above a couple of times, it is very good but I'm not sure where the nearest stop to your apartment will be. If you go all the way to Santa Catalina it will be about a 15/20 minute walk to your apartment with luggage. You'd need to check yourself with the actual apartment address, but it looks like the previous stop, Alcaravaneras may be about 5 minutes longer.
If you don't fancy the walk, there a usually plenty of cabs at Parque de Santa Catalina.

We conquered the parking issues, sorted shuttle buses, got on the aeroplane* and arrived at Las Palmas airport - couldn’t make head nor tail of the buses so got a taxi in the end at 42€ so not too bad. Well equipped little apartment only a 2 minute walk to the seafront, restaurants, supermarket etc. Pick the bike up in the morning.

*couldn’t get through the security gate until I remembered I’ve got metal knees - the best laugh the security bloke has had in years. The plane (Veuling airbus A20) was the most uncomfortable, cramped thing I’ve ever been on in my life.

I know Arsey has a thread going about his ongoing trip to GC but I thought I’d just round this thread off with a summary of our experiences.

Firstly, those of you travelling from the UK probably don’t realise how lucky you are in terms of cheap, direct flights. There aren’t any direct flights from France and as we are old farts we wanted to depart and arrive in daylight so we flew from Barcelona (3h30 flight) which is a 10 hour drive from here. We flew with Veuling who make Ryanair look like a luxury service.

Getting from the airport into Las Palmas was not straightforward - in the end we opted for a taxi (40€).

We stayed at Hotel Apartmentos Bajamar (obviously pronounced Bahamar if you want the taxi driver to understand you!). The apartment was clean and well equipped with a very comfortable bed. It was ideally located about 100 metres from Playa Canteras with lots of cafes, restaurants and a supermarket. We adopted the Irish Rover as our regular beer o’clock establishment and ate in a different restaurant every night which were all OK but none stood out.

We picked up the Stelvio from Canary Ride (5 minute walk from the apartment) the morning after we arrived - professional, friendly service. We set off for the hills using one of the routes they provided. We missed a few turnings and with Google maps rerouting almost instantly we soon found ourselves on gravel tracks pretending to be road which proved fairly testing on the big, heavy bike. Once we got the navigation sorted out we enjoyed 4 good days on the mostly excellent roads. I did find that there was a lot more traffic than I had expected especially the last 20km getting back into Las Palmas in the early evening. The buses on the mountain roads don’t dawdle either.

The trip wasn’t intended to be 100% motorbike, the main aim was to get some sun after we abandoned our camper trip to mainland Spain at the beginning of January because of the bad weather. The weather in GC was very good, generally 20C by midday and cloudless skies. Overall a very enjoyable trip.

Ref buses in GC. From airport terminal to bus stop is 10 minutes walk and you route through a car park, all signed but maybe not the easiest first time.

Sometimes if it is very busy at the airport bus stop and there will be service people there to help in English. And sometimes the bus will be full and you will have to wait. Know your place in the queue and don’t be shy.

We got a bus from Vecindario to Puerto Rico, first one full second one driver was directing me to traffic side luggage compartment which he didn’t open. Eventually we bulled onto the bus with 20KG + 10KG luggage and two other bags.

It was a challenge, like an off road obstacle that you could go around (by getting a taxi 🤣) but at this stage we had put in so much time I wanted to see it through🤣🤣. Anyone can just jump in a taxi!

Riding around GC I noticed a lot of bus stops had a lot of people waiting. On arriving Puerto Rico bus terminal spoke to a German tourist who was having to get a taxi to the airport after the bus was full. We may face this on return journey for a taxi fare probably not much change from €100.
