1200 GS 2012, been a lazy starter since new, new battery fitted, still lazy. Do you reckon its the starter motor that needs replacing or could it be something else?

99% of the time anyone reports a lazy starter motor it’s the starter that needs replacing or rebuilding.

But, check the main earth point (tank off and it’s on top of the engine), check all other connections at starter motor and battery. By pass the bikes HD cables with some other known to be good eg jump leads.

I’m sure it’ll be the starter.

2010 GSA. Had my starter motor replaced at 70,000 miles - was sluggish to start for quite a while before, then progressed to not starting when hot ( would when cooled down). Been great since the new replacement.

Funny enough, just going to post the exact same question

2011 TC 20K on the clock

Noticed its not bursting into life when the starter is prodded, today was a few revolutions before it fired up

cant say whether hot starting is an issue, but its changed

I was toying with twin cable battery to starter, ( think ill do that anyway)

I'll get prices on new vs reman (again)

A friend of mine with a 2010 was having the same issue, and I got him to do some electrical tests and I told him it was the battery, but he didn't want to accept that as the battery was only a few months old. Then the battery died, so he took it back and it turned out that the particular battery had a poor CCA rating to start with. So my first question to you is What's the CCA rating of your battery?

CCA varies from 150A to 240A, so you can see there's quite a difference, and when the starter takes 150A (my measurement) once the motor is turning, you can see it needs a good battery.

I have a year old motobatt in mine,

i may swap the lithium back in

So just been through my paperwork

For the Hexhead 06-08 it's listed as a Bosch unit , but i believe they also did a Valeo unit

For the 2010 on they just list a Bosch unit - the part number is different, but it looks to be the same preengaged type unit

You could also get an aftermarket Arrow starter

If the units are all compatible, and i suspect they are

I used this company for a refurb / reman unit

It was £160 all in with an 18month warranty

they dont list bike stuff, you just to email or ring for details / pricing

I’ve fitted lots of stater motors from eBay that customers have supplied. Mostly Chinese made, about £60-£75. Some I fitted a few years ago and they’re still working perfectly, maybe more long lasting than more expensive and genuine bmw items :D

To be honest that’s why I get the customers to supply me with the part. If it’s cheap because it’s shite quality it’s not my problem. And I do emphatically stress this to my customers, I’ll remove and refit the item if it fails no problem. But they have to deal with their supplier. But so far all have been good 👍

If it turned it over for a few revolutions before firing it isn't the starter motor. It's doing it's only job i.e. turning the engine. Also if it's worse with a hot engine then I would look to fuelling as the issue.

Out on Saturday to meet my son. Going to Glenshee for coffee. Forgot there was a Highland Gathering at Braemar. 5 mile queue of traffic. Passed a lot of vehicles in the queue, pulled in when I could not see round the corner. police Scotland traffic cars every few minutes, because Charles and Camilla were in residence and attending. Stopped bike. 10 mins later when queue was moving again, went to start and it would not. Crap!
His Majesty’s finest every few minutes asking if I’d broken down - yes I have. I’ve phoned the AA.
40 mins later when sub-contractor from Aberdeen phones to say - “it’s definitely a bike?” He asked a question about whether I was getting funny signs on my screen when I turned ignition on. I wasn’t, and as he was still on phone I thought I’d let him hear the sound of the coughing the engine was doing trying to start. We’ll blow me, did it not just start as he’s on the phone. Got my gear on, and headed home with my son.
I’m wondering if it’s the starter motor, battery seems charged and keeping charged via trickle charger. But even when I am home, and again in the garage this evening, it seems to take two or three big attempts to start before it actually does.
Is there anything else I should check before committing to starter motor replacement therapy?
Anyone want to comment on costs for starter motor replacement, and how many hours it might take?
Any ideas? Thanks.

Have fitted two of these for mates this week. Both bikes failed to start when hot. About 25 minutes to change.

Further to my last post on lazy starting, just had my 2012 1200 GS delivered back by the Motorrad driver after a new clutch fitted , who remarked about the starting, he said he had the same problem on his and suggested to fit a battery booster pack, anyone here know anything about these . if so, do they work, where can they be got and at what cost ?

My 2011 one with 9k miles needs a battery - it'll just start, but ride 5 miles then I guess with BMW's joke wiring a little warm it really hates life...

I was just reading its not just all the bikes for the last 20 years that come with pathetic under rated wiring to the starter and a battery made of chocolate - they even do it on all the cars too - got to love accountants
