Hi Guys have any of you removed the active exhaust valve on your LC`s is so dowse it sound better when idling.
I am assuming the valve is just to cut the noise down when riding slowly then opens up at higher revs?
Dose it perform any other function other than noise control?

Cheers,

If you mean what I would call the butterfly valve, operated by Bowden cables then yes, I believe it also adjusts back pressure on the engine thereby maximising torque available at any given engine revs.

More educated amongst us may put me right!

You can't take the valve out of the standard exhaust on a LC - it is built in. You will need replacement headers.

No, mine by the grace of God sized open, sounds marvelous all the time, it's designed to reduce noise at low rev's to meet some kind of kill joy regulator.

When mine stuck open, the BMW tech told me it does nothing apart from help with emissions. So mine was stuck open, so he said if BMW wouldn't replace it, leave it, as it has no impact on performance. If you remove it, you need to do something about the servo as on start up the flap closes and then opens, so it its stuck or not there, a fault code is shown when the mothership is plugged into the bike. But there are modules you can buy to stop the error codes. As for noise, I didn't notice much difference when mine was stuck open, intact I didn't know it was stuck open until I went for a service.

Another take on this. My 2015 GSA went in a couple of weeks ago for its 24K service and the dealer lent me a 1250GS for the day. The 1250 was a lot quieter and way smoother than mine and particularly at 30 mph in 4th/5th gear which mine wasn't at all good at with surging and general rough running. Went to pick up mine and was told the exhaust butterfly valve had seized open and not to worry. Next day took off exhaust, disconnected Bowden cables etc and sure enough valve seized solid. 30 mins of gentle persuasion and spraying of carb cleaner was enough to have it operating nice and smoothly again. Result: much smoother running at low speeds, better response at low throttle openings and even the GSAP improved at low revs.

All totally subjective but I'll be keeping the valve functional as long as possible, especially as it's a complete PoP to fix.

Like I said, I did not notice any difference, I didn't even know mine was stuck open :)

It is good to know that some things don't change...@ 6000 miles my exhaust valve finally makes squeaking noises turning on the ignition like the one on the 1200 did...:D I won't bother this time and just ignore the noise because eventually they all do !

If you wonder if leaving the valve permanently open will make a difference, the simple way of testing is merely to remove the plastic cover and unhook the cable tha pulls rhe valve towards closed position. It's a 15 min job and no fault codes will be triggered.
