Sorted nearly new headlight for £450 so not too bad. Dealer quoted £760 and even at that certainly affordable. To look at the bright side, if the bloody thing ( bird ) would have hit me, my helmet, arms or even worse the bars it would have been a much more worrying problem, both physically and financially.

Looking at the lens itself- it is really thick and I cannot believe a stone would break it so I am still of the mind that the protection you can buy for it would not have done any good.

I had a pheasant hit me on the shoulder (KMD here was following) - it wasn't too bad.............bit of bruising, went down in a week

Tell that to the 3 lc owners who have had their headlights replaced at my dealers due to stone damage , not everybody can afford £1000 to replace a headlight

Calling CYMARC. If the headlight guard is of limited use, what about a set of bull bars? Something that could deal with pheasants, badgers, stray dogs, deer, buffalo - you know the sort of thing. As long as they're cheaper to buy than an LED headlight unit you could be on to a winner!

This is what it looks like when a pheasant hits the headlight hard. Look how it's shoved the headlight back and broken the mounting ( and the bolt that goes into the unit ).

Don't think any cover would protect that.

And you have to remove the bodywork to remove and fit headlight. What a palaver!!

Do you have the LED headlight? And did the stone go right through the Lexan, or just chip it slightly?

You're lucky it didn't bugger any of the bodywork. I thought some people had their headlights stolen, so thought you can just fit it without removing any bodywork?

I took the headlight out easily on my GS without removing the body work but one of the circlips was a bitch to get back on as there is also a big washer. I had to take all the body work off in the end but it would be possible to avoid this step if you can push the washer up high enough. One of the circlips has a piece of plastic in the way making it hard to access.

Claim and they'll just boost your premium. NCP is just that, they let you keep your discount. So if you're on 50% you still have 50% after your claim. But your policy could go up by 50% or more.
So if your premium was £200 it was actually £400 with 50% discount. After your claim they could increase your premium to £600 and honour your NCP of 50% but you'll be paying £300!

Simples! You can't beat the insurance companies!

My other bike is a Hayabusa, yes, yes, I know, pointless, ugly, bring it on! But the point is, since new ('59 plate), I have used 2 insurers, MCE and Bennetts, on alternate years. Each year they provide me with renewal figures that, even after I phone them, are still higher than the other company. No claims, ever, and heres the kicker, the same underwwriter!

My point is, claim! you pay the insurance so make it work for you. 100 quid extra anyway for claiming? even with excess that seems like a bargain, and thats assuming you stick with the same insurers. Claim then when the annual anal reaming comes around just search for a better deal.

My 2 penneth worth.

£318.................some £540 cheaper than a LED one

The LED headlight sure is costly to replace, but if it pleases the owner to have a fancy LED then that's their choice

We use a lot of LED lighting in our products and although its reliability has improved, it still fails prematurely. This is the biggest risk for most GS owners.

I guess BMW may cover the headlight under warranty, but you're on your own after that. I'm starting to turn into a Luddite in my old age and think some of these optional toys are overly complicated without any tangible benefit

In reality I don't think it makes you more visible, if I see an oncoming WC GS/GSA with a LED headlight I don't find it particularly bright and distinctive
