After a few hot days (40 degrees C) my Gel battery appears to be leaking.

Has anyone had a similar problem?

Is it a Varta or an Exide Gel battery?

If it is leaking then I suggest that you remove the battery pronto.

My 1100 leaked the battery from new and in fact had leaks coming from the seams between the top cover and the body, there were no cracks. I picked my bike up in summer so it was quite warm also.

The problem is, if you leave it to leak, then it will dribble down onto the battery carrier which is mild steel coated with paint. Then it dribbles down further onto the plastic starter motor cover. Also underneath the battery cover is your throttle cable set-up between your left and right throttle bodies, under those is your gearbox, somewhere inbetween are two fuel lines.

So I would suggest if you have a dealer see them, if there isn't a dealer within a 1,000 Klm's or so then I think you should do some serious checking and possibly pull the battery out

I myself have recently installed a Hawker Odyssey battery after just on 5 years with the second battery which was installed a few weeks after new.

I replaced the battery carrier myself as I wanted to explore the bike, trust me when I say it isn't as easy as it first looks. My Haynes manual on the section about battery carrier removal says:- First, remove the tail light!

I went a different route which required me to bend ever so slightly the original carrier cradle, insertion of the new carrier was a reverse that required a small bend and then a straightening of the metal spar that I bent. Not correct but saves about 3 hours of labour and lots of colourful language.

Battery question???

As i took my tank off the other week to do some wiring for some aux spot lights, i noticed a great big space in front of my battery carrier. I think i am right in saying that this is where all the ABS gubbins goes if you have got it fitted.(Which i obviously have not).
It got me to thinking that this would be a good place to modify and then you could get one mother of a battery in there, if the bugger ever packs up in the middle of nowhere,no problem just keep your finger on the starter and let that bring you home!!!
Seriously tho has anybody done this??

leaking battery

The Gel battery is in fact leaking from the "vent" according to an auto-electrician. The charging system is faulty and is overcharging the battery resulting in the inards boiling over.

The battery carrier is acid damaged, the left intake tube is damaged and god knows what else under the carrier.

It looks like the bike is going to have to get to the "nearest" dealer for a fix.

Thanks for the help
