Ok before I get a wise cracks and have to start stroking my beard, I'm drawing a blank with the search functions so am opening my self up to wit wisdom etc etc.

As a new GS owner (less than 400 miles worth) I have a seep as it were from the hub on the rear wheel (the other side to the shaft side).
Anyone experienced this and any clues as to which seal it may well be?

Cheers

Chris

Ah, you might not like this.

There's a possibility that the seal is leaking because the final drive bearing has gone phut and stuck a bit of drive cage through the wall of the seal. Noticed a lack of smoothness in the back end? After 400 miles, probably not I'd imagine.

I speak from experience here, only I didn't spot the oil until after the bearing had collapsed and I then had to send the bike round to Steptoe in a van:blast

Do a search for "final drive bearing" on here and look at some of the horrible pictures. I suggest that a good first diagnostic step is to do a change on the final drive oil and see what colour it comes out. As guidance, black and grey with metal bits in it = bad.

On the bright side, I may just be being pessimistic because I had the horrible stuff happen.

leak

Don't panic it is possibly the seal but it might not be caused by the bearing,
if it does require both it is not too bad a job, I think we are assuming it is an 1150, or 1100?.

Thanks Chaps, I'll take a look at the thread suggested and go from there.
It is a 95 R1100gs, like you were saying I can't really tell what's normal and not just yet.
Many thanks for all the help, I'll let you know how I get on.

Final drive bearings can rumble for ages or just fail unannounced, in my experience.

My first rumbled for thousands of miles and Steptoe fixed it for me.

That one also failed, that time without warning and the cage ripped the seal out:eek:

Not too expensive to put right.
