Hello

I have a leaking petrol tank. It was all repaired and modified and if doesn’t have any rust.

Most probably one of the welding sections was not correctly made and is now leaking.

What is the best way to seal it?

thks

Get it re-welded. Anything else is a bodge.
There are some two part putties that are petrol resistant but, it's still a bodge.

......tell me you tested it before getting it painted

It’s painted and installed in the bike. I had no problems with it for more then 3 months. Probably vibrations started the problem

if memory works

i think loctite make an epoxy based sealer which you wash around the inside of the tank. you have to remove all the fuel taps etc.

There are several two pack tank sealers (POR-15 springs to mind, but the classic bike mags have adverts for others).

However, as others have said, I'm inclined to say that if it's otherwise good and rust free, you should bite the bullet and get it re-welded. Tank sealers are really bodges and are intended to rescue tanks that are beyond welding or have internal rust problems.

My friend used Frost POR-15 on his 1973 V7 Sport Moto Guzzi after recommendations from the airhead chaps in this thread and it was a very effective repair at a reasonable price. Well worth a try.

for a temporary fix chewing gum is very good. Chewing gum is fuel proof :rob (there are not very many fuel proof sealants) it just needs to be chewed for quite a while (usually untill the flavour has gone)

tried petseal, and it worked for me, the white coloured stuff was better, i could see where it went,
the stuff with carbon fibre in it was harder to see and i dont think it did any better, (both worked fine though)

Hello

Thanks to all for your replays.

I know that the best would be to dismantle and weld again the PD tank bur since it’s already painted I will avoid that option.

I must check if I can reach the interior section that is leaking. I eventually can try to seal it applying on of the recommended products just in that section.

up until that day I will try the chewing gum! Any special brand recommended? :)

POR 15 is the one to use. Fuel is having more and more Ethanol introduced, which not all the sealants are compatable with. I have seen plenty of tanks at a friends paintshop that have been treated with the white sealant (Kream?) and it starts to peal off and clog the fuel system after just a few years. Of course this could be down to poor tank prep, but I have not heard anything bad about POR 15 and have used it sucessfully myself.

I’ve tried Trident strawberry flavour very well chewed!

Didn’t work! At least this chewing gum is not petrol proof!
:blast:blast

I have heard that soap (i.e the hard 'bar' variety) will temporarily seal tank leaks, although this would only be an emergency 'get you home' solution...

Oh dear, like i said i have only ever used wriggleys so cant realy comment on trident. I would have thought chewing gum was chewing gum. It didnt like being put on when fuel was comming out, that made the gum go a bit funny.
Has the fuel you are using got a high ehanol content ? If so :blast:blast
I have hered of soap being used as matt mentioned but have no idea of the best way to apply it. Good luck :thumb2

maybe being a British model - it was imperial thread, and that's why it didn't work?.... :augie
