Hi Guys,
Would anyone know why the seal between the gearbox and drive shaft on my 1200 gsa keeps leaking. I've had it replaced twice already and now the 3rd one has started to leak after around 400km. The first replacement seal failed after 1200km and left me stranded. I don't want that happening again.
thanks for the help guys

Yes, I would.....

either crap mechanics or crap/deformed materials they are working with.

Simples :thumb

edit - oh and why not get over to the 'I'm new here' section and introduce yerself properly like :D

It's either total incompetance as suggested or there could be a defect (deep scratch) on the surface of the shaft that's letting the oil through or rapidly wearing the lip of the oil seal

thanks guys

thanks bud,

I had it replaced by BMW twice now and it's leaking again. they said there was nothing wrong with the last one but the replaced it anyhow just to be sure but this one has started leaking as well. They fixed it for free the last time and I guess they had better do it again.

Thanks for the info.

What's the symptom? Is oil actually dripping out underneath?

I know its not the same issue, but I had the front fork leg seal replaced 3 times, before they eventually found a minute almost invisible dent on the fork leg and replaced the entire lot. That fixed it.

Good luck.

yea ,
the oils dripping out by the back wheel all over the back disk

The seal could be leaking because there is play in the bearing letting the shaft move up and down, probably when at running temperature.

That looks terrible,
I hope they haven't screwed mine up like that. I just took it into a dealer today and there going to have a look. This will be the 3rd BMW garage it's been to but it's my local garage so they cant pass the buck anymore. I'll let ye know how it turns out. Did they try charge you for a gearbox Streaky after they obviously did the damage?
Kev

Unfortunately gearbox oil seal leaks are a common problem on 1200's, but unless there is wear on the shaft, or a problem with a bearing, both extremely uncommon, when new seals are fitted, the problem disappears.
Your dealer should have examined everything to make sure nothing was going to cause further leaks.

As for Streaky's!!!!!
Hard to believe, but unfortunately true.

Could be a blocked gearbox breather.

Also check they're not overfilling the gearbox oil. Only a slight overfill can cause a leak (DAMHIK:blast)

Hi kev extended warranty covered mine all i paid was £100 access ,New gearbox was fitted on a thursday bike had to be recovered the next tuesday as there was still oil dripping out of shaft cover, when i collected the bike i was told that it was not leaking , it was oil that had not been cleaned out of the shaft cover when the new gearbox was fitted . So far ok

Hi Guys,
Well I've been in contact with my dealer and they reckon that it might be as Spout suggested a blocked gearbox breather. The only thing is that they have to take the whole bike apart to find out which will cost about 900AUD in labor. A new breather looks like it's worth 10$ at the most
They said they checked every other possible avenue> I guess we'll find out in a few days.
Again thanks for all the info guys

Hope you get it sorted kev ,I have sent my photos to bmw customer services and bmw warranty to see what they think.

Spoke to BMW customer services today and they said that this dealer said his bmw trained tecnicians are very capable of carrying out any work required in the future:rolleyes: I Dont think so

Well the problem seems to be fixed all right guy's. Thanks for yere help. The gearbox breather was full of crap and oil. I was doing some off road riding in the northern territory and everything gets covered in a very fine red dust so it most likely happened there. Hopefully I'll be able to put a filter around that area before I go there again.
Thanks again.

glad you got sorted kev, i would just like to add my gs has covered 24000 miles including four europen trips and the only time it has failed is on my way home after having work carried out by my dealer the first time was when they fitted a final drive with a missing o/ring which covered the back wheel with oil and landed me on my arse with a bad ankle injury the rest is as above never got much satisfaction from bmw uk so i will now go direct to munich

I can also confirm this statement is factual and correct !
