I love this web site, but the more I read the more paranoid I get about my bike! I have always had a build up 'black muck/mist' around both head gaskets. I clean this away (and I can see the edges of the shiney gaskets again) but over time it builds up again. There are no drips of oil or weeps to be seen. I am sure it is not just road dirt as it would be all over the heads. Is this normal or do the heads need torquing up? The bikes only done 15k and always had this happen. The warrenty is up in 22 days, so if any of you think it needs sorting please let me know!
Thanks.

Sandwich gasket ?

F&F -- There was a problem with an early batch of 1100GS gaskets in it's younger days that gave rise to the symptoms you describe , this was solved by BMW opting for "sandwich" gaskets , and these cured the problem .
I've not heard of this recurring on 1150s but no doubt those with considerable knowledge & skill (Steptoe et al) , will elucidate .
If your warranty is up in the near future , perhaps a visit to the dealer of your choice would be a sound idea ?
All the best , Jim .
