Hi there,
I have recently bought an 1150gs, and unfortunately I need to leave her tucked up in my garage while I'm gone. Is there anything I need to do to make sure that it is okay when i get back? I have been told to connect it to an optimate, and have informed my brother that he is to babysit this while im gone. Anything else though?

Big lock and chain.
Disconnect battery earth, forget the optimate.
Blanket over the whole thing.
Have jump leads and air compressor available when you return.

I connect an optimate when I park mine for 4 months through the winter, then press the button and ride to work when I renew the registration in spring. If I'm feeling really conscientious I check the tyre pressures.

All my bikes are 'Optimated' and this has saved me a few quid on replacement batteries.

What BinRidin Says!

Charge battery fully and then Disconnect battery earth

Honestly Optimates are Not the be all and end all but they are good

As already said

Charge and disconnect battery,

Drop tyre pressures by about 10 psi

Spray all apart from pads and discs with ACF50

Job done

As above but I'd use Scott oiler FS365 which is easier to wash of than ACF50. I'd also put the battery in the house where it's nice and warm:thumb

Fill petrol tank completely....that way no rust forms from moisture in the tank.

Get bro' to rotate the tyres once a month so you get no flat spots.

Spray with AFC50 or FSS or WD40 on all parts EXCEPT the brake disks and calipers.

Remove negative earth from battery.

Block air intakes to stop the mices getting into the airbox to nest.

Block exhaust exit to stop moisture ingress.

NOTE all of the above and stick the note onto the petrol tank so you can reverse ALL of them when you get back.

all the above is bollocks! clean it, fill it with fresh fuel and oils, spray in acf50 ...............................lend it to me ! i will selflessly drive it , get it dirty, fail to wash it .....and give it back hanging !...how does that sound ? :D

No need to disconnect the battery earth lead. Just pull fuses 3 and 5. Job done.
Re-insert fuses on your return and it should fire up and you can ride off into the sunset (after putting a few psi's into the tyres).

+1 to steptoe

i would say still rotate the back tyre stops the sidewall getting feked if the presssure drops and the rim lies on the tyre carcass

Leave it on the centre stand and don't worry about the tyres at all.

Make sure that it is completely dry when you put it away and if your garage is dry don't even worry about FS365.

Very kind of you by the way theoneandonly, i'm going to have to respectfully decline your offer though, as tempting as it is.
