Leaving on a side stand

Hi all!

I've read that leaving the GS on its side can let oil drain into the left cylinder, so i've seen people recommend always leaving it on the centre stand.

Is this really necessary even for when you're parking up for an hour or so?

Cheers

Anders

No ...

... short term it shouldn't matter unless the engine is badly worn :thumb

I had a slight problem on mine with the left hand cylinder so I always used to lean it on a wall to the right side.

Sorted :D

Can't imagine how you manage to lean it on a wall ..... :hide .. is it me?
Would love to hear how you do it Richie. Does it get scratched at all ? Is it safe ?

Hi Anders!

The boxer = 1 cylinder pointing down on sidestand.
The 4 cylinder inline, like K100 = 4 cylinders pointing down on sidestand! :eek

Sometimes when my boyfriend leave his K100 on it's sidestand it makes a lot of nice smoke when he fires it up - cool! :thumb

What I'm trying to tell you is not to worry about it!
Perhaps the engine are using a little more oil when you leave it on the sidestand, but that is all. Unless it's old and almost worned out, and I mean real old!

You can keep an eye on the spark plugs and see if the left one are getting more dirty when you leave it on the sidestand, buy new ones, and keep an eye on the spark plugs when you leave it on the centre stand, and tell us if you notise anything?

Don't worry about it; the BMW company write warnings and tell us all kinds of things, and I have never heard/seen they wrote not to put it on the sidestand.

-Did you know there are airplanes with hanging cylinders? :)

:) Liv.

Jheesh; pull the left cylinder cover and look at the oil all over the place. Then pull the right side-- there's oil all over the damn place too.

Just ride it.

Excellent one Richie, I can just imagine you doing that sort of thing :)

I often leave my GS parked on the sidestand for whole weeks at a time and I ride it a lot and never had any problems, I heard the rumour too, but I never had any problems

When mines parked in the rain I usually park the front wheel about 4 foot up a wall so water doesn't go down the exhaust pipe :thumb

Do not leave it on a jetplane!

''All my bags are packed I'm ready to go
I'm standing here outside your door
I hate to wake you up to say goodbye.
But the dawn is breaking it's early morning
The taxi is waiting, he is blowing his horn
Already I'm so lonesome, I could cry

So kiss me and smile for me
Tell me that you wait for meHold me like you never let me go

I'm leaving on a jetplane,I don't know when I'll be back again
Oh babe I hate to go

There is so many times I've let you down
So many times I've played around
I tell you now they don't mean a thing.
Every place I go I think of you
Every song I sing I sing for you.
When I come back I wear your wedding-ring

So kiss me and smile for me
Tell me that you wait for meHold me like you never let me go

I'm leaving on a jetplane,I don't know when I'll be back again
Oh babe I hate to go

Now the time has come to leave you
One more time let me kiss you
Close your eyes, and I'll be on my way
Dream about the days to comeI wont have to leave alone, and I wont have to say:

So kiss me and smile for me
Tell me that you wait for meHold me like you never let me go

I'm leaving on a jetplane,I don't know when I'll be back again.
I'm leaving on a jetplane,I don't know when I'll be back again.
I'm leaving on a jetplane,I don't know when I'll be back again.

Oh babe I hate to go.''

To leave it on the sidestand, in the mud is better...
