LED bulbs

Oh, with regard to parking light, I bought a cheap LED replacement.
And the original bulb connectors got tucked inside the housing with the new LED's plugged then taped to the patch lead I made to plug into the bike loom.
Everything is completely reversible so I can return bike to standard easily.

The reversed heatsinks fitted fine inside the modified BMW caps, but I ended up going for plain 60mm grommets sandwiched between bulb and heatsink due to the amount of heat generated.
Haven't had water ingress issues even after this little bit of off roading last week...

Eeeek brave man !

i'd have gone round lol

Popped the dip beam in today for a quick run out

7 mile run home mainly A roads

Temp on the heatsink was 37C

I'll drop the original bulbs back in until the grommets turn up

I originally cut off the cover cap used some rubber glove material under the bayonet fitting.
I've since stuck on some tissue paper (one leaf of kitchen roll) with acrylic car body sealant. Then smeared both sides with the same stuff. It cures into a tough flexible sheet. Cut a 1/2" hole through the middle for the bulb back end & jobs a goodun.
The heat shrink sits in clean air with a flexible sheet below to keep the dirt out.
The heat shrink with bayonet ring did restrict reflector adjustment so I turned the fins off parallel.

Why the concern, 37C is body temperature

It wasn't a concern as such, it was an an observation, as others had reported they get very hot to the touch

I'm waiting on the 60mm grommets, once i get those, i will refit everything.

Just got to find a 501 with resistors,, that doesn't get too hot, The one i have has melted its lens cap, (thought they ran cool??)

I don't think grommets will help. The cover cap has an internal fitting with no external ridge to put a rubber cap over and no internal "tube" for a grommet to butt up against.

That's why I cut the top off the cover cap and glued a flexible (let's call it a membrane) sheet over the inside inner edge.

Patch lead finally done after much swearing, but no burnt fingers...

Now to see if it works....

Oneplus 2 = my phone

What gauge / amperage wire did you use?

The terminals will only accept 5amp by the look of it??

Also what pins went where in the 3 way connector ?

No idea what the wire was, I have a box of 12v electrics odds and ends and cut the wire out of a defunct loom.
The pinout for the connector I got from my Haynes manual wiring diagram. Earth, main beam and dip beam.
If you need it, I can post a pic, let me know.
BTW, I added a trigger wire to the patch lead on dip beam live to switch one of my relays for the angel eyes.

I'm using the previously linked 60mm grommets. The fit perfectly into the housing around the face the BMW covers seal to. The one with the cut outs for the covers 4 bayonet type fixings.
They com plain so you need to punch a hole in them for the bulb thread, them punch it up with the heatsink.

Iv'e ordered the grommets, when , when they arrive ffs i;m going to punch a 15mm hole, and run the power lead out of the back.

Ive made a patch lead, so i can leave the original loom inside the light and feed directly from the back

I tucked the headlight bulb connectors into the casing.
I did not due a patch lead as I'd (at the time) not found a 3pin connector for the loom to headlight fitting.
5 amp wire will deliver at least 60 watts. More than enough. The OEM loom wires look much smaller than that.
You need to consider where to put the bulbs' ballast boxes. The LED bulb's have a relatively short inline connector so the patch leads need to be long enough to reach along the beak frame to your ballast blocks.

I did think of using the ceramic blocks direct to the bosch / plug, but the combined black wires would make that difficult, so left as is .

Just waiting on the grommets. then need a few hours in the dark to do beam set ... Which has changed, according to UKMOT.

Good Day Gent's
I ordered these through an Ebay (In stock UK) turned out to be a province of China i wasn't familial with but hey ho they turned up after 2 weeks So I'd give Pricekiller_2K a miss on ebay. Also ordered the 60 mm grommets which I hack sawed in half so they where more flexible. Used a 20mm cutter in the middle of each disc. Cut down the outer covers like everyone else has, stuffed the ballast/driver things inside the headlight left the cable poking out, Popped the lamp in place sans heatsink, screwed the cut down covers on, pushed the rubber grommet down over the lamp pulling driver tail/connector through at the top, screwed the heatsink down , did connection up and bingo! Roberts your mothers brother etc etc etc. Actually I tried the rubber glove method first but it wasn't working for me and the 60mm grommets are to thick as one item!
Basically it was a total arse to do until i did it the second time as described above where it's pretty easy! need to be night time so i can adjust etc & really hopping they are something half as good as the HID 50's they've replaced!
On a side note i've ordered some LED spots just to chuck more light up the road as well: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/302243750116?_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649&ssPageName=STRK:MEBIDX:IT
Hope that might be of use to someone
Cheers D

You must have much smaller ballast boxes. No way would mine go inside the headlight case.
All I needed was a three pin inline connector to fit the loom headlight connector. One wire would have to be solder jointed into one but no big deal.

Indeed, my ballasts are std size, no way are they going into the light units

just waiting on them fecking grommets

Mart

Yes they seemed much more compact than the others on here so far and where shown in the add with the larger ones! we'll see how they run, technically they'r drivers rather than ballasts but i'm only being picky as i'm a sparky hahah :-)

Well luckily the grommets turned up today,

as my main connector into the lamp unit decided to have a hissy fit today

Although as grommets go, there a bit crap.

Anyway after a huge battle to get everything neatly ish in, there done, ,

I'll mark the garage door tommorow and do beam set if i can

Pics will sort of follow when i can see to take them
