LED Fog lights 2014

Terry

That's a real shame I'm heading for a new unit next month.

Mine was working yesterday (intermittent fault) - you only know it's not if you pull up behind a clean car !

Chillax Winston. There is light at the end of the tunnel.

:-)

I wish it's so annoying how hard can it be. I know of 3 others with the same issue too. So it's back to the dealer tomorrow to give them the bad news again.

I have informed my local dealer NOG that the light has only lasted 2 weeks since having the new wiring harness fitted and waiting to hear back from Germany now.

I removed the connector my self today and cleaned the contacts so it's working again at the moment. I shall be giving my bike a good blast of ACF50 this weekend so will remove it again and make sure there's ACF50 into the connector. If it doesn't fail then I will be impressed with the ACF50

Excellent news; seems we have root cause of the problem at last. Now try not washing your bike for a while. Also, are you sure that ACF50 isn't eating connector seals? Personally, I'd say don't use the stuff - just refrain from washing it, and maybe using a magnifying glass to inspect the connector seals.

All the failed lights have been on the left only ? The connector is exactly the same on the right and also the rest of the connectors on the bike are the same style.
All of which should withstand any amount of washing or riding in the rain or leaving dirty caked in shite whatever but the fact is it fails after only a short time, but why only the left one I Know of 3 others all the left side.

Always knew the root cause water ingress into connector definitely not ACF50 rotting seals I've not used any yet. ACF50 is designed to be used on aircraft so is supposed to be safe for all parts. As you can see in the picture it's pretty dirty so fault is not over washing.
So far it's had 3 new lights and 2 connectors it's a shame dealers don't have people with your expertise working for them explaining that yes sir your bike has developed this issue because you washed it.

Well done a bit of investigating myself how hard can it be well in this case this time round it seems water ingress isn't the issue hopefully with a 4th new light it will be fixed
I checked the wiring had power and was corrosion free (adapted a test bulb)
Then swapped the right and left lights now the left is fine and the right doesn't work so this time round looks like the actual light is at fault again.
Oh well 4th time lucky hopefully.

Well the washing thing was just a theory.

Very weird that your bike is eating lights.

Same one each time? As they are wired in parallel that rules out voltage spikes which is the only other thing I can think of.

Yes very strange either that or I've been unlucky and always ended up with dodgy replacements. I've left the one I swapped from the right on the left now. This has been fine from new and 9000 miles so let's see if it throws a wobbly and eats that one too.

Right that's the 4th new light fitted wonder how long it will last. I've fitted the original which has never failed to the left and the new one on the right, will it fail? Which one?
Or is it finally fixed?

Just dug this thread out.

Washed the bike yesterday, rode home at stupid of clock this morning and my left hand led fog light is flickering on and off. Then gave up the ghost completely as I got on the drive!
I'll see what I can find when I take it apart...

I've just seen this thread for the first time. I'm on my second new left hand (nearside) lamp. I like to ride with them on, but when I went on a week long trip around Ireland when it mostly drizzled down. My nearside lamp failed at the end of the week. I thought it could be a bulb failure as the bike was almost seven months old

The Dealer replaced the full lamp as it's a sealed unit. It worked for a couple of weeks and then it began failing intermittently. Still in that state due to my underwhelming apathy.

It is odd that it just seems to be left hand failures doesn't it? I'll get on to my next lamp in due course, or when I can be arsed, whichever comes first, but in any event before the machine is 12 months old.

I took the units apart to put some yellow tint film on them, when I put them back together, I added some silver heat transfer paste to the joint between led unit and body (which acts as a heat sink) as I figured if the junction was poor, the LED may overheat and break down, I wonder if I was right and failures are being caused by overheating LEDs failing.
