I have been wanting to upgrade/switch to LED lighting for a couple of years now but was always struggling to find suitable bulbs. Even started to import some directly from China. One of the reasons for wanting to do this was being able to remove the secondary wiring for the relays and also to reduce/remove the largish ballasts necessary for HID lights.

A couple months ago, I came across a set of 3600 Lumen bulbs that had an H9 fitting for my Hella 90mm light units and were short enough to fit into the available space. See photo.

So I switch the bulbs out with my 35W HID's. All good. The light is just about comparable to the HID and the beauty is that there is no element in the LED's to shake apart. On long trips I've taken into Eastern Europe, I have had consistent problems with that. 1000's of KMS of washboard surface takes its toll.

Then, last week, The bulb fell out of the light unit:eek:

Upon inspection, it appears that the 'lugs' that hold the H9 bulb in place has sheered off. I showed bas at Hyperpro and he noticed that the mountings appeared to be made by 3d printer and were never going to be strong enough to hold the bulb, with its rear heat sync, especially in offroad conditions.

So , question is, has anyone else come across this issue and found a different, and more elegant, (see below) solution around it.

What I have done, as a temporary solution (bikes shipping in 3 weeks time), is machine a couple of 'caps' to go over the ends of the heat sync's and then secured those to the headlights with lock wire. Any other suggestions welcomed. I don't really want to ho back to HID or halogen if I can avoid it. Are there better options on LED bulb types?

Starting point....

Caps....big enough for the small ballast to go through, but small enough for the heat sync to sit inside to reduce lateral movement.

Any thoughts ?

BTW, these are fitted in my XC in case anyone was wondering. With the triple Vision X, I have over 10.000 lumen's on the front for a total of 6.0 amps.

The silence is deafening on this subject:cool: Has no one else looked into fitting LED's :nenau

You are way above me on the diy fabricating front And probably a lot of others. I ve no suggestions as I'm running on stock lighting but keep it simple and good luck

I've wondered about fitting an LED bulb in my new nav tower. It has a Hella H7 bi halogen projector fitted. What is the heat output and beam pattern like?

What about making the caps wider and use a bolt to secure into the light (where the torx screws screw in to on the rear or the light housing)?

LEDs produce about 90% less heat than a halogen. Beam pattern is likely to be different.

Unfortunately, then I run into space issues in the mounting cage so it isn't really an option. Nice idea though.

Correct, these units seem to run very cool and can actually run submerged (just the bulbs even). I don't have an issue with the beam pattern, but it's not been something I've been particularily focussed on. I am more interested in the reliability, durability of amp draw of the bulbs.

Nice tower. Looks like there is plenty room for a second light mounted above the one that's there ?

Thanks. Yes, I'll probably fit another light above it but it will be a vision x solstice or similar for high beam only.

As yours have broken I guess they're not a good recommendation! I'll have a look online and see what H7 LED's are available. :thumb2

I really like that light behind the perspex set up, is that a 1200 screen?

I have got in touch with the manufacturer in China (via the supplier) and pointed out the shortcomings. I am hopeful that it will be sorted out in the future.

It's a triumph explorer screen with the lower 'wings' cut off.

Do you get much light reflecting back at you from the perspex? Probably only noticeable at night?

It's not on the bike yet but I've powered up the light and there's no really noticeable reflection.

They look good but are they for right hand drive only?

Can't help with the chinese but interested if you do find out more.

The bulbs were from 'Dr Auto'.

However, these on ebay look the same and are later bulbs than mine....even brighter. There are plenty of this type of bulb on ebay. Watch clearance behind the bulb for your setup, far more than standard is required.
