LED Lights & Problems

As for those LED light units, I've come across other similar ones and have found that they are manufactured for western supplier/brands and the manufacturer can't supply them separately/directly.

However, have you tried searching through AliExpress?

I think you're right Mike. They will be an OEM supplier and as such aren't interested in small volumes. However, I think a phone call by a chinese speaker might get a response. I've looked at loads of LED lighting on the web and these seem far and away the best on offer so far. I need to say that it was Colebatch that found these ones and we've both tried to contact the supplier without success.

I've been looking for these for years also and have found similar ones that are supplied in the UK. However, they are not cheap and they ARE heavy, that's why I haven't gone down that road yet. They were under bus/coach fitters when I first looked. I also found the Chinese supplier but got no response either. Its fully locked. Its not worth their while dealing with an end user as if it got out, they could lose the contract and may be a patent infringement. We deal with the Chinese Patent Office alot at work.....there really is one :)

Look here: http://www.ns-sirius.com/

And here for a UK supplier: http://www.maxparts.biz/index.php/lighting/headlamps

Actually, it looks like the price is coming down slowly. I haven't looked for a while and thing these UK based ones are slightly cheaper.

The Bi-LED lights weigh 1.35 kgs each so that's no use in my opinion. Another 6 months and the tech might be there for us to make use of them.

David from Maxparts was very helpful and said he would let me know if he came across anything that would be suitable for long distance adv travel.

Yep....these LED headlights are just not built for adv bikes yet. 90mm Hella units with LED bulbs do work though.

New Bulb type fitted

I have just fitted yet another type of LED bulb into my Hella units and I am very please with the vastly improved beam pattern. There are now 4 LED panels per bulb, mounted at 90 degrees rather than the 2 I had before mounted at 180 degrees. The lights aren't any brighter but it does improve the pattern on the road.

This type of LED has small fans on the back rather than a heat synch so are both smaller and lighter than the previous ones I tried when starting this thread. The mounting tabs where the bulbs fit into the lights appear to be more robust too.

I'm off to Ireland in the next couple of weeks and will report back if there are any issues.

They appear to be available in most bulb fitments. The link is to an H9 auction as its what I need.

Just looked through this thread for the first time.

How did you get on with the diy end cap secured with locking wire?

Just seems that vibration could 'rotate' the cap a few degrees either way, and eventually fracture break the locking wire.

I think that I would have run the locking wire at an angle to the fixing point, and then another wire at an opposite angle to the fixing point, effectively 'triangulating' the fixing to prevent any rotational movement.

Main thing is, did your repair work?

The repair worked just fine....though it was ugly. I did put a few angled wires in at the end for stability though no wire actually broke.

The new bulbs I fitted don't need this....so far :) as the back of the bulb is smaller, lighter, and looks like it has not been 3d printed(easily breakable).

I've had a real cheapo Chinese H4 Hi/Lo LED in place for I guess about 18 months now... no problems at all thus far!

It cost me the princely sum of I think £9 delivered (although it was on a special at the time with a couple of quid off) and was 95% Plug and Play – I just had to make little adapter to fit the OEM H4 plug, all of 5 minutes work.

I think they're only a pound or two more expensive now, you can find them here: https://geek.wish.com/c/5539ba298e7ce40c13b0c024
