Leenane and Beyond

I will try and finish this-up tonight.

Had to be at home on Wednesday to drop and collect kids at school and a few other bits.
Tried to kill a few overdue weeds around the garden as well.

Got freed-up again on Thursday, so ready to head north to get the two Photo Points up there that I missed out on earlier in the week.

Planned to call to the Pathfinder One on the way.

Grumpy was in relaxing mood.

Did not believe my story about the rouge speedo readings
But did nip-up my pivot bearings and ditch the dodgy rear brake pads.

And I was on the way

Took the Old Dublin Road as far as Portlaoise.
Grand spin now with no traffic and lovely surface.

Good food in Durrow.

Then a nice wander northwards.

Not sure was it lime spreading or just dust from the lack of rain for months, but the farmer was giving it all he had.

Onwards to Ballyjamesduff for Cavan / Monaghan Photo Point.

(Gerry you get us to interesting places).

Stayed here in Monaghan Town.
Great hotel and very good value at € 59 a night inc breakfast and use of the leisure facilities

Interesting outdoor furniture.

Had a few pints in the town later, enjoyable town and very busy all summer I gather.

Took a spin around Armagh on Friday, beautiful countryside on a really sunny day.

This took my eye. Had not really seen hand-gathered hay-cocks since I was a child.

I am told it is likely to be done in small meadows.
This was nostalgic to see.

Had a short stop in Loughgall, which is a really well-kept place, with obvious historical legacies about.

Stopped at Banbridge for the Down / Armagh Photo Point.

I tried to follow Gerry's direction of being a bit more creative with the pictures in this one

P1000314.jpg

Nearly lost the bike in it.

Moved on to Crossmaglen for lunch, another place with strong historical legacy.
Been here a few times but never stopped to eat.
Seemed pretty tranquil about.

Top class food at a reasonable price in the hotel too.

Only photographed the dessert

Did not get anymore photos on the way back to Cork.

Great week to be out and about on the bike and great people to meet-up with at Leenane.
Grumpy One is a master at picking creative routes and dragging you to hard to find places.

I think Jochen has confirmed the weekend again for next week - look forward to that.

Only Cork and Waterford Photo Rally Points left to do now this year - thanks Gerry for the organising.
I should get the entry in without the last minute rush this year.

Great that you included the least known and one of the best biking areas in Ireland Frosti. The Sperrins. Love them.

The Sperrins is a lovely area alright Peter.
Hardly saw a car passing through it.

A few years ago I was making up the Glenelly valley heading west on the bike - not a soul on the road except a PSNI man on duty who stops me. He asks no questions more incisive than were I'm from; but he keeps me talking about this & that (mostly the rose of Tralee) for 20 minutes until a car happens along. I got the impression he was lonely & would hold the car driver until other company arrived.

Grumpy and I were passing through South Fermanagh last year on a lovely isolated stretch when Grumpy waited at a crest in the road as I doubled back to do a return spin - in order to get a nice picture.
After waiting a minute or two I proceeded back to Grumpy's hideout for the picture, I arrived to encounter Grumpy facing the other way in deep conversation with two PSNI men who pulled up on seeing Grumpy.

A conversion about bikes went on and Grumpy explained about the Photo Rally and the picture he had been planning to take of me.

They had seen both of us passing by and then one of us heading back a bit fast (me) and thought their may have been an accident or something.

We eventually mangaed to get on our way after 20 mins.
No picture having been taken.

Talkative fellows out in the countryside alright.
