Staying in the Grand, ehh...? I remember nights in the Grand - staggering out at closing time, seeing the St Clair moored down by the fishing boats and knowing you couldn't get off the island for another two days even if you wanted to. Drunken Norwegian sailors who'd get up and piss on the lounge carpet.....

Parties with US Coastguards who got Jack Daniels for sweeties. Going back to Shetland Seafood huts and "entertaining" one of the young ladies before getting up, walking several miles to work, driving the truck back to the harbour, picking up 10 tons of fish with my bare hands , bacon and eggs and pints of Guinness in the Marlicks for tea and then into the Grand to do the whole thing over and over again....

Oh to be 21 again....:augie

Aye there is somebody on Shetland on here....

Lol. enjoyed that, thanks for replying, have had a quick look on tripadviser, think its still the same carpet :) found this review helpful

May once have been grand but not now. A bit smelly when you come in the back entrance (smoke and toilets) and dated inside. My room had three single beds in it, was dingy nd felt cold due to the lack of atmosphere. The seagulls (no fault of the hotel) were the wake up call at 0400 each morning. I'm... more .
........must remember to give the back entrance a miss :augie :D

Just be careful - if someone asks you, "Hoo's de pully boy?" The answer is not "Sook 'im an' see." Unless...:ymca

"Hingin' ploomb" is the usually approved response to that particular greeting. :)

Boys, its a sad day dat I left da croft.

Waas seems a bra bit awa noo....

Leasky.

Wasn't Leasks the garage on North Road? I'm sure Marinpro used to have a fuel account with them.

No...that's bollox. The garage was Bolts. What was Leasks....? Was that the Ford dealership where the partsman asked me if the Transit distributor cap I went in to buy was for a diesel one?

Yes, Leasks was the bus / taxi outfit originally up past the cinema but now relocated on the main road out of Lerwick to the north.

The cap question sounds about right.....:blast

They are distant cousins of mine but the stupid questions seem to have known no family bounds.....

Shetland is a cracking place, friendly folk and plenty of good, open, well maintained, fast roads.

We like to say that its the last place that God made before he started making mistakes.

The main draw-back at this time is the bloody "non-reflectives" up there selling drugs - bast#rds!

Anyhow, there is a great mid-summer rally every year (Da Simmer-Dim) and people still wonder why so many bairns get born every March...:toungincheek

There are some good roads from Lerwick down to Sumburgh and from Lerwick up North towards Brae and through to Sullom Voe; or west from Brae towards North Mavine.

From Lerwick you can also head West towards Walls, which offers about 20 miles of good roads before they become single track.

From Weisdale (on the road from Lerwick to Walls) you can also veer north back towards "Da lang Kems" via Veensgarth and enjoy a 1.5 mile straight to clear any cob-webs which may have gathered during your sedate bimple out west.

If you miss Walls; your next dry land is Canada.....:thumb2

There's a Welsh lad on here who works at Sullom Voe, met him in Lerwick on his GS year before last, damned if I can remember his name.:blast

If you get up to Yell on the GS the old road from Basta Voe (just after the big right hand bend on the main road at Basta Voe, look to your left as you head North) to Cullivoe is a cracker for a bit off rattling about on the gravel and heather. About 3 miles long.:thumb2

If you get up to Unst, have a lookee at the road up to Saxa Vord (the old RAF base), nice bit of gravel up that way, ignore the barrier - just ride round it:augie to get on the 'most mortherly' bit of track in the UK.
Should get a decent view on a good day, plus the Yell-Unst ferry is FOC.

And don't forget to blow the horn and shout "Hello Klankys' mum and dad!" as you ride through Baltasound.

BTW, For a good night with live music, you have to go upstairs in the Lounge Bar in Lerwick.

I think it was the summer of '75. The Police Sergeant on Unst took me up around there on the back of his Triumph - me without a lid. We did have a helmet law by then, didn't we.....? :nenau

Ahh we must know some folk in common then....

Ahh...nights in the lounge wi' Peerie Willie (R.I.P.) and Arnie. The thing was that even these musicians always seemed keen to learn something new and were happy to sit and listen to me play Grateful Dead tunes.
